There are many opportunities for interdisciplinary working, completing modules and group projects with physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians. Investing in early childhood allied health services is vital for ensuring every child has the best start in life. Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) and Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) are urging state and federal governments to fund and support occupational therapy and speech pathology as key elements of early childhood foundational support. These services are crucial in helping children with disabilities or developmental concerns reach their full potential. Happy OT month to our sister therapists! While pelvic floor therapy is a newer specialty for occupational therapists, it is on the rise as another avenue for all folks to get help for their pelvic floor dysfunction. Through the lens of (I)ADLs an OT’s role in pelvic health can include: 🌟 Toileting and hygiene (continence needs, control of urination and bowel movements) and sexual activity 🌟 Sleep hygiene and ensuring sustained sleep habits without disruption and nighttime toileting needs. 🌟 Ensuring full participation in work, play, and leisure activities to improve confidence and comfort in performing these activities. Women’s and pelvic health therapy specialists can be scarce in certain areas. The flourishment of this specialty for occupational therapists means more people can have access to care. GWHI promotes pelvic health through physical therapy, but we are excited to see the growth of the OT pelvic and women’s health specialists.

I am an Occupational Therapy (OT) Student, and I am passionate about the adult, geriatric, and mental health populations. OT can be applied to every aspect of an individual's life - we focus on helping you get back to your daily activities, or "occupations," no matter what the problem may be that's keeping you from them. After a stroke, or following a back or heart surgery, or during a manic or depressive episode - an OT can help with any or all of these. We work in hospitals, in schools, in outpatient clinics, and more. Physical and mental rehabilitation is our wheelhouse, and I love making an impact in patients' lives. Through my occupational therapy assistant schooling, I often find myself advocating for and demonstrating the importance of therapeutic exercises. Recently, I had the unexpected opportunity to practice what I preach after experiencing a shoulder subluxation. To kickstart my rehabilitation journey, I turned to Pendulum exercises, a cornerstone of shoulder rehabilitation. These gentle, controlled movements have been my go-to technique for regaining mobility and strength. Designed to promote healing and prevent stiffness, they offer a way to rehabilitate without putting undue stress on the injured joint. Here are a few key benefits I experienced: 1. Pain Relief:The rhythmic motion helped reduce pain and discomfort. 2. Improved Range of Motion: Gradually, I noticed increased flexibility and reduced stiffness. 3. Enhanced Blood Flow: These exercises promoted circulation, which is crucial for healing.
