Let’s meet one of our awesome volunteers, who co-leads the ATD-GTC Communities of Practice (with Kathy Gargano)! Name: Chelsie Sturm, M.S. Title: Learning and Development Manager Organization: Boston Scientific Q. What do you like most about your job?  A. I love that I get to work on both onboarding and career development of our team. I truly enjoy helping people learn new things and/or uncover strengths that they didn’t know they had. Q. Outside of work, what are you best known for?  A. I am MOM 😊  I have two boys (ages 6 and 10)  and am in my “ sports mom” era. We run from sporting event to sporting event, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love watching them do what they love. Q. Why did you decide to join ATD-GTC and even more, become a volunteer? A. I joined as I transitioned my career from recruiting to learning and development. My manager told me about this group and when I joined, [chapter President] Mary Rapaport encouraged me to volunteer. It’s been so great to get to know many like-minded people across the Twin Cities area. Q. Do you have a favorite ATD event? COPs, Transforming Learning, Learning Labs, social events, the national conference, etc.? A. I’m not sure that I have a favorite; I truly get something out of every event that I attend that ATD puts on. No experience is wasted, and everything has meaning with this group! Consider this framework by CCL! 🤔 CCL’s research-based ‘R.E.A.L.’ framework provides concrete recommendations for actions that you and your organisation can take. 📈 ✅ R - Reveal Relevant Opportunities → This step is about figuring out where your specific institution is lacking in effective DEI policies. Different initiatives will vary in effectiveness by organisation, based on what actually needs changing. If you’re working on issues that don’t need to be solved, you’re making as much progress as a hamster on a wheel. ✅ E - Elevate Equity → Remember that giving everyone an equal opportunity doesn’t mean giving everyone equal treatment. Just like schools give dyslexic students extra time or reading aids, your organisation might have to consider accommodations based on a multitude of demographic factors. Consider giving your applicants and employees contextually appropriate solutions. ✅ A - Activate Diversity → Make sure you’re actively trying to encourage contribution from many walks of life. Whether that’s from your employees or customer base, engage with these differences *actively* and intentionally to achieve best results. ✅ L - Lead Inclusively → Be intentional about the skills that you’re learning as a leader. If you’re attempting to lead a DEI initiative, improving your own knowledge of the problem will help you tackle it as best you can. First Gens Rise Up 👐 From immigrants to migrants to everyone in-between, could not be more proud to be in this "nomadic" community I call home. Speaking from experience, sense of identity, purpose and even just Career is often a struggle when you are first generation. Pressure is put on you by yourself but also your family. There are times that you feel as if you need to excel because of what sacrifices your family made for you to have opportunity for education, career ect. No one talks about the guilt that comes with being first generation or a immigrant, only the "benifits" you magically have / do not really have. One thing we all have is Resilience. Programs like TRIO exist for a reason and they are beyond essential. Luther College had an amazing program led by Chivonne Blankenship Marlow & Gwen. Passionate people inspire those who need it most. 💡A reason I work for the government and continue to do so is to inspire others but also provide representation where it has not been before. Create and enable systems, policies and programs that are equitable, inclusive and equal. This starts with education. Education is the foundation that often lays your future as an adult. 🌟 What an inspiring story from U.S. Department of State ! Government is an awesome career and often hard to explain especially when you are first generation. Still to this day, my family has no idea what my job entails, but hey they could not be more proud! The federal government is an amazing opportunity for those seeking public service and lifelong careers. Awardees can participate at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business or a program of their choice based on FSRSD approval.   How were awards determined? Diverse business leaders were encouraged to apply for the award by member corporations familiar with the business's product and/or service capabilities and believed that the Program could offer tangible benefits to the business owner. Applicants were evaluated on a growth trajectory, geographic market capability, expected outcomes from attending the program, industry impact, and personal and professional development.   “Our goal is to provide opportunities for deserving individuals to pursue education and unlock their full potential,” said Marsha Thornton, Chair of FSRSD’s Supplier Development Committee, which oversees the sponsorship selection process. One of the things that has delighted me about serving at Howard Community College and in Dragon Country has been the support we get from parents of current and former HCC students. They have great affinity for our college because of the maturation they experienced on campus and the impact it had on their careers. There is no stereotype for these proud parents about two-year education. In fact, they view HCC as a distinct advantage-bearing enterprise for the county. They reflect this pride in their advocacy, their promotion, and their giving. The common themes I hear from all kinds of people regardless of their race, wealth, industry or gender: “My child REALLY enjoyed HCC and learned so much there.” “They really appreciated the professors and all they taught them and the careers they helped them to discover.” “Looking back at how much money they saved, they are really grateful to have this kind of school so close by.” “They went away to school and hated it, but once they came back home, they really took off.” Higher education faces so much flux because the pressure and experience of four-year education is not conducive to flexibility. The best four-year experience is for a person who has a long-term vision about their career, who has good work habits, and can navigate personal and financial obstacles with relative ease. Most people have challenges that are more personally complex and which aren’t aligned with “just making it happen.” The good news is that Howard Community College is designed for those complex challenges, and our president Daria J. Willis, Ph.D. leads and builds with those challenges specifically in mind. When she speaks to our senior leadership team her question is typically, “so how do we make this happen to help students?” Because of this culture and leadership, I’m finding that the question I most commonly ask myself is “how do I get even more parents to be this proud of our college?” #dragoncountry #howardcounty #communitycollege #howardcc

Meet Our Vice President of Professional Activities, Justin Schoenborn! 🌟 As the VP of Professional Activities, he aims to continue enhancing the chapter's influence and growth within W. P. Carey School of Business – Arizona State University. This includes expanding the network, highlighting the chapter's excellence, and maintaining high standards for events. Empowering members through professional development is a key aspect, achieved by hosting relevant workshops and creating events that appeal to a wide range of students, ultimately enhancing member engagement. These goals strongly align with the Professionalism and Scholarship pillars. They emphasize turning members into accomplished graduates and leaders. By facilitating interactions between professionals, accomplished adults, brothers, and other W. P. Carey students, his objectives empower current and future brothers by underscoring the importance of a diverse network and personal growth. He's particularly excited about allowing brothers to learn essential life skills, especially in personal finance, which is often overlooked in college classes. This will significantly impact their financial success after graduation. He envisions strengthening relationships with other clubs to provide members and other undergraduate students with a diverse network and a range of opportunities. Co-hosting events with new clubs and organizations allows for diverse interactions and opportunities. For Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, he plans to collaborate with various clubs and organizations within W. P. Carey to create opportunities for growth and diversity. Sustainability, personal growth, and professional growth will be supported through continuous improvement of speaker workshops and networking events that have proven to be effective in providing professional growth opportunities. He plans to evaluate Delta Sigma Pi's success based on individual member growth, emphasizing that growth is not a linear process. The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) team is evolving to become a learning-centric organization. They're using insights from our partnership to inform the implementation of their new strategic plan. How are they meeting their goals? Expand Brand Awareness: SCUP developed a more focused content strategy to showcase their achievements and knowledge, increasing their value as a strategic learning hub. Increase Association Membership: They're aligning their values strategy to member needs and expanding their reach to non-members with the goal of improving membership conversions. Grow Conference Attendance: They adjusted their strategy to focus on the value of participating in events and the benefits of contributing as a presenter to grow their community of higher ed professionals focused on learning. This was one of the first events I attended as an EmployIndy team member and it's still one of my favorite events each year. So what? I'll tell you what: 1.)
