🧠 How did the 3D-BrAIn project start? Get to know Femke de Vrij, project leader 3D-BrAIn and principal investigator at the department of Psychiatry at Erasmus MC, leading a lab working on human disease models of neuropsychiatric disorders. 🔬 In the 3D-BrAIn project, a team of scientists, engineers and mathematicians is working together to create a microelectrode interface, recording the electrical signals from brain organoids at a very high resolution. “In five years, we expect to successfully conclude the project by providing a proof-of-principle for the 3D-BrAIn central nervous system model.” Ultimately, this can be used to help improve the diagnosis and test new treatments for a range of brain diseases, such as epilepsy or schizophrenia. Part 1: Machine learning (ML) is changing the way that medicine is practiced. While already clinically utilised in diagnostic radiology and outcome prediction in intensive care unit, ML approaches in psychiatry remain nascent. Implementing ML algorithms in psychiatry, particularly in the treatment of depression, is significantly more challenging than other areas of medicine in part because of the less demarcated disease nosology and greater variability in practice. Given the current exiguous capacity of clinicians to predict patient and treatment outcomes in depression, there is a significantly greater need for better predictive capability. Early studies have shown promising results. ML predictions were significantly better than chance within the sequenced treatment alternatives to relieve depression (STAR*D) trial (accuracy 64.6%, p < 0.0001) and combining medications to enhance depression outcomes (COMED) randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) (accuracy 59.6%, p = 0.043), with similar results found in larger scale, retrospective studies. What's the relationship between grey brain matter and Early Onset #Psychosis (EOP)? New research from NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) has found that people with EOP have a reduced volume of grey matter across nearly all regions of their brain. The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, is the largest ever brain imaging study in EOP and has provided unprecedented levels of detail about the illness. Join me in celebrating 100 years of EEG, please reshare! On July 6th, 1924 Hans Berger recorded the first EEG on a human, only published in 1929. This invention of the EEG has resulted in many clinical applications ranging from diagnosing epilepsy and sleep disorders to Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI/BCI), neurofeedback and EEG as the first clinically actionable biomarker in precision and stratified psychiatry. New research from King's College London reveals a significant association between reduced grey matter in the brain and Early Onset Psychosis (EOP), with the largest-ever brain imaging study in EOP showing decreased grey matter across nearly all brain regions. The study involved 482 individuals with EOP compared to 469 healthy controls from international sites, providing unprecedented detail about the illness. Researchers hope the detailed brain mapping will aid future diagnosis and treatment tracking for EOP, which manifests before age 18 and presents challenges in understanding due to limited research. #BrainResearch #PsychiatryInsights #EarlyOnsetPsychosis
