In honour of Earth Day, we’d like to touch on the theme of "Planet Vs Plastics" 🌍 Did you know over 8 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans every year? 🗑️ This staggering figure underpins the urgent need for action. Recently, negotiations were underway to develop the Global Plastics Treaty by the end of 2024. The treaty aims to address the full life cycle of plastic, including: 🛍️Production of polymers 🧪Usage of chemicals and additives ♻️ Waste management and circularity 💰 Subsidies and fiscal incentives for the plastic supply chain If passed, this would be the first international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. At Nupo Ventures, we believe that sustainable packaging practices and innovative technology are key in combating plastic pollution. The global market for sustainable packaging reached a value of USD 274 billion in 2020. It is predicted to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5% between 2023 to 2030. This growth surge is primarily driven by increasing consumer awareness and stringent regulations to reduce single-use plastics. As demand grows, so does the urgency for innovation. Companies are actively pursuing eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics, striving to introduce pioneering solutions and meet consumer demands ♻️ Few noteworthy examples are: 🌾 Edible packaging: Singapore-based design studio Forest&Whale has created Reuse, a container for takeaways made from wheat husks that can be eaten or composted after use 🔬Nanotechnology packaging: US-based startup Titan Bioplastics creates nanotech-based sustainable materials 🍘 Seaweed-based packaging: Notpla makes biodegradable and edible single-use packaging, cardboard coating, takeaway boxes and more using seaweed harvested from Europe 🥥 Biodegradable packaging: Go Do Good is an India-based startup that makes sustainable packaging using biomaterials such as coconut coir, eggshells and banana fibres Here at Nupo, we are dedicated to building sustainable startups in the food and agri-tech industry to address pressing environmental challenges like plastic pollution and innovative sustainable packaging solutions. Through collaboration and innovation, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution 🌍♻️ . . . . #earthday #plasticpollution #sustainablepackaging #nanotechnology #startup #vc
