Nissan has unveiled a £2 billion initiative to produce three electric car models at its Sunderland plant, aiming to safeguard 6,000 jobs and bolster the UK automotive sector. Alongside manufacturing electric Qashqai and Juke models, the plan includes the next-gen Leaf and the establishment of a new gigafactory for batteries, with potential government support. While the move has been praised for job security by the Unite union, Nissan emphasized the need for an optimal business environment and government backing for competitiveness. The investment coincides with North East England's investment zone creation, estimated to create 4,000 jobs. Nissan remains committed to UK investments despite Brexit concerns and aims to manufacture electric vehicles solely by 2030, aligning with sustainability goals. 💡 The first panel discussion at #GigaUSA examined the #automotive industry in the era of EVs, with Benchmark COO Andrew Miller sitting down with two of the sector’s leading figures. General Motors’ Omar Vargas commented: “We know that there is a competitive landscape for the entire #EV value chain, and in order for us to be successful, we need to ensure that we are being incredibly focused and strategic on how to map out that supply chain system.” Christopher Smith of Ford Motor Company told delegates: “All of our business cycles are going to be longer than any particular political cycle. So our job is to make sure we are thinking about creating the vehicles that our customers are going to want." Miller highlighted a key takeaway: “The new era that we’re moving into very much puts politics at the centre of the global EV supply chain.”
