"Ultimately, steward leadership is a choice driven by intentionality. You can make excuses, or you can follow the lead of companies like Patagonia, Tata Group, and Faber-Castell Group, which have embraced sustainability and society-first strategies from the get-go and found profitable solutions to humanity's most pressing challenges." Our CEO, Rajeev Peshawaria, recently appeared on CNA with Cheryl Goh and Wui Lynn Chew to discuss the disconnect between boardroom promises and their actual practices. Rajeev shared the inspiration behind his commitment to sustainability and leadership, and explained the motivations behind his book, Sustainable Sustainability. He also addressed why existing ESG frameworks often result in greenwashing and superficial compliance, arguing that an upgrade to ESL—Steward Leadership—is crucial. By adopting Steward Leadership principles, he emphasised how organizations can create a win-win-win future for all stakeholders, society and future generations and the environment, driving meaningful and impactful change. It was a privilege to share the stage with leaders like James Braham, Mhairi Donohoe and Steven Knox-Johnson and our excellent moderator Vanessa Hicks to discuss current Sustainability Challenges and Opportunities at our recent Leadership Forum in Adelaide. During the session, we explored the vital distinction between sustainability and climate change, emphasising why both are critical in today’s commercial landscape. We also discussed the ambitious targets and commitments Downer has made to reduce emissions, highlighting the need for a strategic, collaborative approach in achieving these goals. Our Social Infrastructure and Citizen Services business unit is leading the way in fleet decarbonisation and CO2 reduction, setting a strong trajectory towards our Net Zero objectives. However, we also recognised the challenges contract managers face in this transition—particularly in decarbonising fleets and identifying sustainable solutions that benefit not only our operations but also our clients. This discussion reinforced the importance of working closely with our customers to offer turn-key solutions that meet their unique sustainability goals while aligning with our own. By embedding sustainability into our business practices, we can drive impactful change across the board and ensure that both Downer and our clients thrive in a low-carbon future. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to this crucial conversation. #Sustainability #NetZero #ClimateChange #Leadership #DownerGroup #WHS #HSE Downer

Unfortunately, not all sustainability stories are genuine. The dark underbelly of sustainability that we often overlook but need to address… “‘Greenwashing is essentially when a company or organisation spends more time and money on marketing themselves as being sustainable than on actually minimising their environmental impact.” https://lnkd.in/gFtYRPkF We need to educate ourselves about greenwashing so we can stand up against it. The only way towards a sustainable future is to genuinely be contributing towards environmental, social, and economic issues rather than just offering lip service. In every industry there might be a darker side that we often don’t acknowledge, because it’s easier to look the other way. Within sustainability this dark side is greenwashing. In the last 10 years, alongside the many positives in the industry, unfortunately greenwashing has been rising. We need to address it because it is undermining confidence in genuine sustainability initiatives. I wanted to deep dive into the topic of greenwashing and provide ways to avoid and stand up against it. Implementing such a transition requires a deep understanding and proactive management of the social processes that determine the motivation and behavior of stakeholders, especially the most vulnerable. Thank you to the Climate & Sustainability Leadership Summit | 1BusinessWorld for inviting me to share insights into stakeholder engagement strategies that companies can implement in a just transition to a net-zero economy. Global Sustainability Partner for Women Executives, helping you develop and lead your company's sustainability/ESG agenda | 20-Year Corporate ESG Executive - Sustainability Consultant | UN Speaker on Sustainability
Do you question your leadership when it comes to driving change and implementing new ESG practices in your company? You're not alone. When I started working with Beth Borody CDI.D, she had major imposter syndrome. She was new to sustainability but had an incredible opportunity to develop and lead a sustainability program in her company that was meaningful and created impact. Here's what we did: ✅ We specifically looked and building out a leading sustainability practice, with leading strategies. ✅ We worked on her mindset, building belief in herself and her ability to influence other senior executives in her company. Her results? She created a leading sustainability strategy, started her own membership The Femina Collective for women in her industry, became known as an industry expert (in high-demand) and was promoted to VP, Sustainability. Would you like to put yourself in bigger rooms, lead your company’s sustainability vision and in doing so create a more sustainable world? It really does take one person to create massive change. We just need to believe that. Send me a message and let’s see how I can help, or download my free Sustainability Leadership Scale (link in comments). ⬇ #rippleeffect #sustainabilityleadership #womeninsustainability
