🌱 💡 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐚𝐛 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 - Deep tech innovations need a strongly interconnected support system In Germany, we excel in basic sciences but often struggle to transition inventions from the lab to the market. This is partly because universities and industry often operate as separate entities with limited exchange. Last week, the Monheim team of Bayer Crop Science | Innovation Ecosystem Karl D Collins, Nisha, and Juergen Benting visited us at our Gateway Excellence Start-up Center University of Cologne offices at InnoDom Cologne. We explored how we can work together to bring more innovation to the market and discussed how to establish 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬. Universities and industries in Germany need to adopt a more innovation-driven mindset, but it's challenging to go against long-standing rules and regulations. 🔑 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐟 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 So, the next step is bringing more key players together on the sketching board to discuss how we can coordinate our efforts to enable more innovations to reach the market. Strategic learning for transformative innovation ‘Experimentation’ constitutes in many aspect the very engine of ‘transformative innovation’. Yet, experimentation also presupposes parallel processes for ‘learning’, so as to both ‘control’ and further ‘develop’ the experiment. This need for integrated learning processes will only increase as with growing uncertainty and complexity. To further explore this link between ‘experimentation’ and ‘learning’, ETIN initiated earlier this year a specific work theme around the concept of ‘strategic learning’. #Throwback to Syensqo's #InnovationWeek! From Brussels to Paris and Milan, Syensqo's brilliant minds joined forces with Nobel laureates, Ernest Solvay Prize winners, innovators, startups, customers, and more to explore the endless possibilities of science and technology. AND we also had this year’s edition of #GirlsLeadinginScience, which brought together 50 young and talented #STEM students for a hackathon focused on developing solutions to combat water waste and climate change. With 15% of our workforce dedicated to Research & Innovation (R&I), 12 major R&I sites around the globe, 5% of our turnover invested in R&I, and more than 600 scientific patents filed within the last 5 years, we are explorers constantly in pursuit of breakthrough innovations that enable the circular economy, clean mobility, biobased solutions and more. 🔍 Collaboration opportunity! With the groundbreaking eMotionizer project, dr. David Ceulemans, Prof. Stijn Derammelaere and their colleagues at the CoSys-Lab research group have developed algorithms to optimize machine performance, including energy consumption. They’re now on the lookout for companies willing to test the techniques in their own business processes.   The algorithms have already been validated in several industrial cases. “The results are quite spectacular,” says Ceulemans. “To have a machine perform the same movement, 63% less energy was needed. We counted 61% fewer vibrations, and the motor could be made 31% smaller. 5th International Bioeconomy Congress The fifth Bioeconomy Congress will take place from September 18th to 19th, 2024 in the Schwabenlandhalle in Fellbach. The event, organized by the state government of Baden-Württemberg, is an ideal platform for exchanging information about the current developments and future potential of the bioeconomy. Companies from various industries have the opportunity to find out about innovative technologies and sustainable business models and to make valuable contacts. The 2024 Bioeconomy Congress is all about the transformation towards a bio-based economy based on sustainable and resource-saving processes. The organizers want to bring together leading experts from science, business and politics to discuss solutions to the challenges of the future. The program includes the following items: Keynote lectures on the role of the bioeconomy in various areas. Panel session on in-depth topics such as startups, bioprocess engineering or sustainable living. Discussion rounds to classify the results of the day. Networking over shared dinners and breaks. Our technology transfer manager Florian Stark will give a lecture on the first day of the congress entitled “Navigation aid for start-ups: support options at a glance”.
