Except now there is widespread acceptance of global warming caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, and new research has discovered — bummer — most stormwater retention ponds emit more of the gases into the atmosphere than they store, or sequester, down in the mud or sediment at the bottom. The development of stormwater containment ponds as a method for handling runoff, which is filled with a mix of everything water can wash away, whether inert or dangerous, has evolved over several decades. In new subdivisions, a series of ponds to catch excess nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and animal waste are typically part of the design. One pond each at the four corners of a bridge corrals rainwater pouring from the road surface filled with motor oil, rubber from tires, assorted pieces of glass, plastic, fabric, paint, and anything else that ends up on the roadbed. The ponds are often filled with the types of plants they are using in the Everglades restoration to filter polluted water from Lake Okeechobee before releasing it south to its historic flow toward Florida Bay. The thinking was, and still is in many cases, that the stormwater ponds are a great solution that uses nature, not electricity, to clean polluted runoff as the water percolates back down toward the aquifer. But in a study in “Communications Earth & Environment,” a journal with research on Earth, environmental, and planetary sciences, researchers tested several stormwater ponds in Southwest Florida and discovered “Florida’s urban stormwater ponds are net sources of carbon to the atmosphere despite increased ... By comparing the amount of carbon sequestered at the bottom of the ponds with the level of emissions of carbon dioxide and methane, both potent greenhouse gases, it became evident that many stormwater ponds emit more carbon than they store. The variables that can affect whether stormwater ponds are effective carbon sinks are almost limitless: how deep they are, how long water stays in the ponds, whether the ponds regularly dry up between rainy periods, if fish have been stocked in them, the make-up of sediments and pollutants in the runoff entering the ponds, whether the ponds are treated with chemicals to control algae growth, if there are crumbling sidewalks near the ponds contributing elements of concrete, the type and abundance of vegetation, or lack thereof, surrounding the ponds, whether muck removal is part of the maintenance of the ponds, whether there are fountains or bubblers in the ponds to add oxygen into the water, how the ponds were constructed … the list goes on and on. But the most important variable is how long a pond has been there. The good news is the longer the ponds are in place, the more effective they become at sequestering planet-warming gases. In the short term, the authors suggest that the role of stormwater ponds should be considered in regional and global carbon models."

Stormwater in our rivers – it's a topic that's been in the news a lot this year, and for good reason. This is a major environmental concern and not something any of us wants to see. At PBJ Engineering Services, our work with water companies gives us a front-row seat to the industry's efforts in tackling these environmental challenges. We're all about supporting improvements in our wastewater infrastructure. And there's been some positive news on this front. In the last week, Southern Water has announced the installation of a new £1 million storm tank at Edenbridge Wastewater Treatment Works in Kent. This vast structure allows more stormwater to be held at the site instead of releasing it into the environment. This development benefits nearby rivers such as the Eden and the Medway. And with Southern Water committing £1.5 billion to clean our waterways, hopefully, it's the sort of thing we'll see much more of in the coming months. #WastewaterTreatment #WaterPollution

🚽💧 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝'𝐬 '𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐞': 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞   🚰 Portland's sewage issue met its match with the '#BigPipe,' a revolutionary system built over 20 years.     💦 In the 1990s, Portland faced frequent overflows into the Willamette River due to its combined sewer system—stormwater and wastewater sharing the same pipes, causing around 50 incidents annually during heavy rainfall.     🌧️ Portland's solution: massive pipes on both sides of the river, capturing excess water during storms, averting combined sewer overflows.     🔧 The west side tunnel, a 3.5-mile marvel crafted by colossal boring machines Lewis and Clark.     🏞️ The east side pipe, 22 feet in diameter, almost six miles long—further reducing combined sewage overflows.     💰 Completed in 2011 at $1.4 billion, the project significantly cut overflows. A recent event on December 7-8, 2023, marked a combined sewer overflow—a discharge of stormwater and wastewater due to system overload, posing environmental and health risks. Permeable paving systems, like PaveDrain, are a cornerstone of green infrastructure. These systems are designed to allow water to pass through areas, which otherwise would be impermeable, to infiltrate into the soil beneath or be stored in a reservoir for gradual release. This technology contrasts sharply with traditional pavement, which redirects stormwater to storm drain systems, often leading to overflow, pollution, and the degradation of water quality in nearby bodies of water. Take a look at the article below on the impacts of stormwater ponds beyond stormwater management. A recent report out of Florida looked at the levels of carbon dioxide and methane produced by the ponds, compared to the carbon they are sequestering. Interestingly, newer and less maintained ponds are producing more carbon then they absorb. The article highlights numerous reasons ponds perform at different levels. In the end, the article also took a look at the impacts of algae growth in these water bodies too. Is this a story of inadequate initial vegetation, improper construction/design, nutrient loading implications, or just the continued lack of infrastructure maintenance? For those entrusted with the care and maintenance of stormwater management ponds, removing accumulated sediments is no small matter. There are many factors to consider, including: 💧 How will the sediments be removed and dewatered?  😀 How will the surrounding community be affected?  🕜 (And perhaps most importantly) How long will it take and how much will it cost? The Clarke Bellinger Environmental Facility, located in Barrhaven, ON, is home to one of the largest stormwater management ponds in Ottawa. Over time, sediment had accumulated in the pond and diminished its ability to store water and contaminants, necessitating a comprehensive cleanout project.
