Another tennis data stat to mark the start of Wimbledon...... In 2020 I made a list of the top 100 men tennis players and analysed their career earnings at that point. The top 100 men at that time (2020) had career earnings of $1.2bn between them. Interestingly the top 3 were: Novak at $143,631,560 = 12.14% Roger at $129,946,683 = 10.99% Rafa at $120,955,904 = 10.23% So dominant in wins, rankings and between them 33.36% of the $1.2bn. IOC to vote on flag football for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics The organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics delivered a proposal to put flag football on the program when the Summer Games return to the United States for the first time in 32 years. The International Olympic Committee will vote on the proposal at meetings in Mumbai, India, that begin on Sunday. Also on the LA proposal were baseball and softball, which have been bouncing on and off the program for decades; lacrosse; squash; and cricket. LA chairman Casey Wasserman said the new sports are "relevant, innovative and community-based, played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and the globe." Flag football is a non-tackle version of America's most popular sport. The "tackles" are made by pulling a flag off a belt worn by each player in a 5-on-5 affair played on a 50-yard field. There are no offensive and defensive linemen. At the World Games last year, the U.S. men and Mexican women won the gold medal. Unclear is whether other sports will have to trim the number of disciplines to help the IOC adhere to the limit it set of 10,500 athletes at a Summer Olympics. Another one..this time Matilda & Chelsea powerhouse Sam Kerr. 87 players high profile players since 2021 out with ACL injuries, missing major tournaments. But why? With the increase in viewership of women's sports, it has put a microscope on these athletes. It has highlighted an age old problem in female soccer players. And the cause is as old as the problem. In the YouTube docuseries Step by Step, Arsenal WSL players and national team stars Beth Mead (England) and Viv Midema (Netherlands) both tore their ACL within one month of each other. The crazy plot twist being that they are also partners. And they would not be the only 2, 2 other teammates that season would tear their ACLs (Leah Williamson and Laura Wienroither). The documentary chronicles the players' return to the pitch, but again asks the question why? There are varying theories as to why there is such a proponderance of ACL injuries in women's soccer: 1️⃣ Female menstral cycles causing joints to be more loose at certain times of the month, but most scientists have not been able to draw a link between the two 2️⃣ Improper equipment, with women often having to wear gear designed for men (I myself always wore male cleats when I played), which has some credibility and traction. Major brands are starting to design female specific cleats and full brands are making female only gear (IDA Sports) 3️⃣ Compressed competition schedule, not allowing for proper rest - this is very true and something the leagues and tournament hosts need to gain a better handle on ❗ BUT the biggest reason to me, and what has always been the #1 issue is inequitable facilities and resources (including staff). In Step by Step, Midema highlights how boys start their academy programs at age 9 (most girls it is much later, late teens) and that the boys teams have a dedicated strength and conditioning coach with them from 9 years old-onward. Girls don't get any of that until 18. And then when it comes to facilities, girls teams have always gotten the shaft. When I was in high school, the girls teams (varsity and JV) weren't allowed to practice at the high school because there wasn't enough room. The boys were given the better field at the school and we had to travel to the local middle school with rocks on the field and where we had to set up our own goals everyday. We were one of the top 10 ranked teams in the state at the time, made it to states all 4 years and where over 50% of the players got recruited to play in college....but we were still an afterthought. 💡 So we have players wearing gear that is no made for them, playing compressed schedules with no rest, with improper training and on subpar pitches, no wonder we have so many ACL injuries. While I hate to see so many players get injuried, I hope it's finally a wakeup call to the soccer community at large that something needs to be done. While the Matildas' run came to an end this weekend, they managed to stop the nation and #change the nation forever! Here're are some staggering statistics that prove why it is:- # The Matildas' Women's World Cup semifinal against England has created history by becoming the most-watched TV program since the current audience measurement system began in 2001 # The round-of-16 match against Denmark reached 6.54 million people on the free-to-air Seven Network, more than the country's biggest showpieces in 2022: the National Rugby League and Australian Football League grand finales, the two sports Australia is fanatical about. From the NewYorker article:- # In Melbourne, officials opened the grounds of the Australian Open and of Australian Rules stadiums, and people sat in the stands, in front of empty fields, watching soccer on the big screens. This World Cup has also brought new heights for women’s soccer globally, not just for its hosts. # At various points, thirteen million people in Brazil watched their team play a single match # Ten million in Germany watched theirs; and, # In China, fifty-four million people watched their team’s last group game. # Almost as many people in England watched the match against Australia, at 11 a.m. local time, as had watched their own Euros semifinal. # Teams from Haiti, Nigeria, and Colombia held or beat the top teams of Europe. # More Americans watched the U.S.’s matches at this World Cup, until the 4 time World Champions was knocked out. "Soccer can change the world" but this year's WWC was a phenomenon; and it showed #Australia what a strong potential it has to change the sporting balance in this country. Sometimes, it’s not the player with the best serve, the best forehand, the best backhand or the best movement who wins. How? I was talking recently with Caroline Garcia and Borja Duran on the Tennis Insider Club podcast about a key milestone in my career. I was coaching Marcos Baghdatis in a Challenger in November 2004, early on in his career. He went to the final, and was up against the world No 14, Dominik Hrbaty, playing at home. At the time, he was ranked around No 200 in the world. His opponent, a former French Open semi-finalist, was better than him in all aspects. Hrbaty also got off to a better start, gaining a double break early in the first set. I thought to myself: this is going to be tough. And yet, Marcos ended up winning. That day, I was a very bad coach because I didn't believe enough in my player. Marcos found a way; he wanted it more, and believed in himself, even when I didn’t. The only explanation was his competitive edge. He taught me a lesson I’ll never forget: that anything is possible on a tennis court. This was the same thing that caught my eye when I first saw Stefanos Tsitsipas play on YouTube as a 16-year-old. Sure, he hit the ball fantastic, but Stefanos’ standout feature was how competitive he was. He had that deep desire to win, and belief that it was possible. This asset is not called forehand, or serve, not even mental or physical: it's called competitiveness. It's the ability to find a way to win the point, win the game, the set, the match, even if you are not necessarily stronger than your opponent. Like all qualities, you can develop and work on it, but the ones who have it naturally have huge potential. As I shared with Caroline and Borja, Roger Federer recently shared a crazy stat in a commencement speech at Dartmouth University: even the greatest players in the world only win between 52 and 54 percent of points in their careers. The winner of a tennis match often comes down to one or two key points that shift momentum.
