A new Energy Crisis Commission has been launched to review the impacts of the gas crisis on households and businesses. The Commission is formed of representatives from Energy UK, CBI (Confederation of British Industry), Citizens Advice and National Energy Action (NEA), and will make recommendations focused on ensuring that the country is better equipped to withstand possible future energy crises. Submit evidence by midnight on 30th August 2024: https://lnkd.in/e94dtjN6 Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit #Energy #EnergyCrisis #SustainableEnergy

If governments are at all serious about climate, we should not be installing any more gas distribution lines. None. But don't assume electricity will be the replacement. All new property developments should require fuel flexible, district energy (hot/cold water) lines. If natural gas is the lowest cost fuel in the near term because the public does not value carbon enough, then use natural gas for the heat supply for district energy. These systems can be easily fuel switched when the policies and market dynamics are right. Dramatically lower cost than replacing gas lines later on. Part of the problem here is that both sides of this debate are assuming the only alternative to natural gas is electricity. This is absolutely not the case. In urban areas, it is district energy that is the proven, reliable, affordable alternative to gas. Particularly in cold, northern climates. Let's not install infrastructure that will be stranded and make decarbonization so much harder.

Out now: A call for evidence from the Energy Crisis Commission. The Commission has been established to learn lessons from the gas price crisis of the last 2-3 years. Chaired by former Treasury Minister Rt Hon David Laws, the commission includes representatives from Energy UK, CBI, Citizens Advice and National Energy Action. I'm very pleased to join them. The Commission will make high-level recommendations on how the UK can be better equipped to withstand such crises in future. This isn't the first time a fossil fuel price shock has had wide ranging impacts on our economy - and it may not be the last. https://lnkd.in/eesNjCj4

📢 Yesterday, Energy ministers agreed to prolong the 15% voluntary gas demand reduction goal until 31 March 2025! Despite a relative improvement in the energy supply situation, the Council's decision shows that demand measures are still needed ahead of the next winter and beyond. We fully agree with the Council's press release stating that this should act as an incentive for Member States to take long-lasting demand reduction measures, in line with EU energy and climate goals. 👇 https://lnkd.in/euNCMWKX

A winter blast of extreme cold weather threatened to overload the electricity grids in Alberta and across the Prairies early this week – which in turn prompted a political storm. Premier Danielle Smith criticized Ottawa for its climate and energy policies, calling renewable energy all but useless in keeping the grid supplied while one of the only federal Liberals from Alberta blamed the province for “decades of underinvestment in the electricity grid.” Here’s how the situation unfolded, and what the future of energy could look like in Canada: https://lnkd.in/gcfuP9ka #energytransition #grid #energy

🇬🇧 “The Energy System Operator and even the Climate Change Committee acknowledge that in a net zero world, we’ll still need oil and gas for a significant amount of our energy. And that’s because it’s not absolute zero, it’s net zero. … That’s why we need to be honest and pragmatic about what else our new energy system will need. A weather-dependent, renewables-based electricity grid means we will need to have flexible power for when the wind doesn’t blow, and the sun doesn’t shine. Which is why we need to make the most of the main flexible power we have today: gas.” https://lnkd.in/dBn-qNJQ
