On this episode of Arts Engines, Aaron Dworkin speaks with Donna Collins, Executive Director of the Ohio Arts Council and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), who reflects on arts advocacy and its profound impact on communities. 🔍 Donna prompts us to question the efficacy of existing formulas and emphasizes the need for meaningful engagement with communities that have been marginalized. Additionally, she highlights the importance of listening to successful practitioners, organizations, and the communities they serve. 💡 Donna champions collaboration as the cornerstone of effective leadership, stressing the power of growing our support networks to navigate challenges and celebrate victories together. 🌟 It's crucial to recognize that advocating for the arts isn't a binary choice, a symptom of White Supremacy Culture, but an essential aspect of our shared humanity. Donna emphasizes the value of cross-sector collaboration, from Arts and Health to Arts and Housing, to foster resilience and unity. ⏳ In challenging times, Donna introduces the "80-10-10" rule, focusing 80% on the mission, 10% on community engagement, and 10% on professional development—a balanced approach for navigating uncertainty while staying true to our goals. However, what would it look like if we gave more effort to our communities and ourselves? #Arts #Culture #ArtsCouncil #Board #Agency #Advocacy #Community #Policy #Ohio #ProfessionalDevelopment #Human #Collaboration

Representation in Life, not just the Arts, is so important for legacy and is essential when you work with communities, especially with Family Arts. Today at the Family Arts Conference 2024, Joseph Coelho & Chandni Mistry both spoke with passion and intregrity about connecting with communities and creative & innovative ways to break down cultural barriers to be more inclusive to the communities they serve. This resonated with me as I have been making those community connections for over 30 years but I was still available to learn some new approaches to my practice. My takeaways from the conference is: 💜To Be you need to See 💜Be Brave & Flexible 💜 Always Reflect & Celebrate (even the small wins) *What are your thoughts on representation in the Arts today? #FACon24 #representationmatters #championdiversity

Check out this amazing story of the life saving skill of knowing how to perform CPR!
I should not be ALIVE today! The fact that I defeated all the odds and still have breath in my lungs is a miracle and a gift 🙌🏼 Last Tuesday, my friends at the American Heart Association shared my survivor video for the first time at the 2024 Detroit Heart Challenge Kick-Off hosted at the Detroit Pistons Performance Center. The event was hosted by this year’s co-chairs, Robert Riney, President & CEO of Henry Ford Health & Arn T., Vice Chairman of the Detroit Pistons. Thank you Sara Hegarty, Sarah Rood, PCM, Renee Rubenstein, MPA, Jason Willis and team for giving my family and I the opportunity to share our story for the purpose of inspiring others and effecting positive change! Every single person needs to know how to perform CPR. I wouldn’t be here today if my wife would not have known what to do 🤯

In the latest episode of Arts Engines, Aaron Dworkin talks with Paul Kassel, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Northern Illinois University, who shares insights into collaboration. According to Paul, fostering partnerships begins with adopting a service mindset—a commitment to deep listening and the dissolution of outdated tribalism. He emphasizes the necessity of embracing inclusivity and collaboration in today's interconnected world. Looking ahead, Paul notices this moment of introspection, post-George Floyd, challenging pedagogies and traditions that no longer align with the inclusive environments that need to be cultivated. This journey demands accountability, reflected in every aspect of one's work, from curriculum development to professional growth initiatives. Paul acknowledges the complexities inherent in this endeavor, especially for artists navigating roles as educators and social-emotional learners. He emphasizes the urgency of expanding the canon to reflect overlooked perspectives and contemporary audience dynamics. As we navigate these transformative times, Paul encourages us to prioritize self-care, cultivate enduring relationships, and immerse ourselves in the art we champion. These pillars, he suggests, are essential for sustained advocacy and meaningful impact in the arts landscape. #Arts #Culture #PerformingArts #NorthernIllinoisUniversity #VisualArts #HigherEducation #Cities #Ecosystems #Illinois #Ingenuity #Community #Education #Partnerships #AudienceEngagement #ArtsEducation #Leadership #ArtsManagement #CommunityEngagement #Diversity #Inclusion #Advocacy #Innovation
