The transformative potential of school meals for children aged 1-16. 📆 17 - 18 June 2024 📍Copenhagen A conference by the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, Roskilde University, and Københavns Kommune within the framework of Food Trails and the Cities Feeding the Future Initiative. The event aims to: ✅ Inspire politicians to maximise opportunities for using public food procurement as a lever in the pursuit of more sustainable food systems and healthy meals for children. ✅ Provide city officers with tangible skills and useful tools to simultaneously achieve multiple objectives. ✅ Develop synergies among #MUFPP cities in the region, national governments and international organizations active on the topic of school meals. ✅ Advocate for cities at the National and EU level to play a crucial role in reshaping local food systems toward sustainable models through innovating public procurement processes and strengthening local supply chains. Thrilled that Food Ladder is through to the final round of The Australian Financial Review #mostinnovativecompanies2024 awards. Food is by far, the most important thing in the world. It is the nexus of the world's health, economic, environmental, climate, social and geo-political crisis. We are changing the way Australia eats. Transforming the longest supply chains to the shortest overnight, by putting hydroponic greenhouses in schools so that kids can grow their own food. We understand real change needs a holistic approach. That's why food security, education, local employment and health outcomes are direct and immediate results of Food Ladder. We are the only network of connected greenhouses in the world and we are driving a new paradigm, a movement that achieves long-term and sustainable impact. Winner to be announced in October.

It’s election day! And Food Justice Fortnight. Two weeks of raising awareness of food-related issues, as well as highlighting the amazing work going on to champion Food Justice in Bristol. Hosted by Feeding Bristol and partners. We joined a session on Monday Burges Salmon LLP to learn how the Bristol City Office (Bristol One City) plugs into the principles set-out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For food justice, this is primarily SDG 2: to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Although it was noted there’s intersectionality across many of the other goals. In Bristol, nearly 16,200 people are estimated to experience moderate to severe food insecurity. A selection of grassroots organisations shared the work they’re leading in communities to address this. These insights informed workshop discussions on what more can be done at a regional and local levels to reduce food insecurity and drive food equality. Our vision at Not Impossible is for young people to gain access to work experience within the vibrant economy, society and environment in the South-West. This includes the cross-sector opportunities here, including the food industry. Our microplacement opportunities can be selected by sector and by SDG, so young people can find work that matters to them. We’re excited to have brilliant local food partners in our host community including LettUs Grow, Bristol Food Network CIC, When in Rome | B Corp™ , Invivo Healthcare, Stroud Brewery - a certified B Corporation, with more on the horizon! We look forward to contributing to this city-wide collaboration by enabling more young people to find opportunities in the local food economy and join the food justice conversation through our microplacements. Knowledge-sharing is key to create sustainable food systems. 🔑 Copenhagen is committed to becoming a green, healthy, and vibrant food city. A key strategy in achieving this vision is leveraging the power of procurement. Our involvement in various EU projects allows us to explore and implement innovative procurement practices. 🇪🇺 For example, through the COACH project, we developed the Legal Guide on Farm to Fork Procurement. This guide provides insights on opening tenders to SMEs and farmers, and on strengthening the link between school children and farms.🌱 Participation in EU projects enables cities to build robust networks for sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices. Advocating for feeding programs in schools is a sustainable approach

Maria, a researcher for ICLEI writes, "I was born in Almería, a city tucked into the southeastern corner of Spain, in the last kilometers of Europe. Now, after five years of living in the Netherlands and Germany, the North of Europe has become my home. Winter's chill can seem endless here, but there's a comforting constant at my local supermarket – the year-round availability of tomatoes and cucumbers, proudly labeled "Origin: Almería". Yet, with every purchase, I can’t help but reflect on the long journey behind these vegetables. My dinner is the product of the labour efforts of migrant food workers across Southern Europe who have become the backbone of Europe’s food security. The resourcefulness of this community, along with their vulnerable living and working conditions, has remained largely unnoticed for far too long. It demands a frank conversation about the role of informal work in the resilience of our food systems."
