Team ERGO is celebrating! 🎉 📣 Today is #WorldSeagrassDay, which is dedicated to an often underestimated but critically important marine #ecosystem: #seagrass beds. 👉🏻 Seagrass meadows are not only beautiful, they also play a crucial role in the balance of the #oceans. They provide essential habitat for numerous marine species, contribute to seafloor stabilization, and play a key role in tackling climate change by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. 🤖 Within this context, robotic technologies such as our Zeno AUV, with their ability to explore the deep sea and collect heterogeneous data, are valuable tools for monitoring seagrass beds. 🌏 Therefore, on this #WorldSeagrassDay, our team invites everyone to reflect on the need to #preserve and #protect these delicate #ecosystems. Let's work together to raise awareness of the importance of seagrass beds and promote concrete actions for their conservation. We are all responsible for our #planet, and protecting seagrass beds is an investment in the future of our common blue #home. #AUV #marinerobotics #oceans #bluehome #seagrass #teamergo

This illustration was a more recent work I did for my volunteering at @mantasdobrasil. I came to share it with you. 🔎 Oceanic Manta Rays are gentle giants that glible through the oceans, inspiring awe and respect. 1- Imposing Wingspan: With wingspan that can exceed 7m, oceanic manta rays are true queens of the seas. Their broad bodies and distinctive pectoral fins make them an impressive sight in deep waters. 2- Feeding and Filtering: These majestic rays feed mainly on plankton and small marine organisms. Their feeding water through specialized gills, is a marvel of evolutionary adaptation. 3- Elegant Demeanor: Despite their imposing size, oceanic manta rays exhibit a gentle and graceful behavior. Swimming slowly, often close to the surface, they provide a peaceful and magnificent spectacle. 4- Important Conservation: Unfortunately, these creatures are endangered due to indiscriminate fishing and pollution. Marine conservation is crucial to ensuring quality safe future for oceanic manta rays and other ocean dwellers. ✨ Enchanted by the majesty of oceanic manta rays? Make the difference! Like and share to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation. Comment either your own stories or actions to protect our oceans. 🌊🩵 #ocean #scientificillustration #ray #marineconservation #oceanprotection #marinebiology #marinebiodiversity #aquaticmajesty #preserveouroceans #rohkattenringerart

Happy World Oceans Day, 2024 We call it Earth, but our planet is primarily ocean. It protects us, feeds us and sustains all life. Humans depend on the ocean for survival, but we invest little in return. For years, experts have warned us that there is no life if there is no ocean. Instead of listening, we have made short-sighted decisions that further its decline without understanding what's truly at stake. To protect our planet's beating heart, we must awaken new depths within our own. We must protect our ocean. We live on a blue planet, and it's time we act like it. Wildlife Heritage Areas was co-founded by the World Cetacean Alliance and was born out of the success of the Whale Heritage Sites programme. The ocean means life, and we must prioritise its protection as if our lives depend on it. https://lnkd.in/gqiYY-r7 #UNworldoceansday #ocean #blueplanet #whales #dolphins #cetaceans #marinelife #worldoceanday #UNworldoceansday2024 --

In this episode of Future World on The Verge, we cover an incredibly important topic - saving critically endangered coral reefs. We partnered with the Coral Restoration Foundation™ to shed light on the issue today. This past summer, conservationists in Florida did something remarkable: they took corals out of the ocean en masse to save them from an ocean heat wave. It’s just one new strategy of many that researchers are trying out around the world to save coral reefs from climate change. They’re also mapping reefs like never before, cloning huge numbers of corals to plant in the wild, and even breeding new heat-resistant species. Will it be enough? Rearranging the furniture when you don’t have hands 🦈🤣 Bardi Jawi Indigenous Protect Area (IPA) is rich in biodiversity. It features a mosaic of habitats, such as tidal pools, mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. We co-designed a monitoring program with the Bardi Jawi Rangers, merging the expertise of our coral reef and fish monitoring scientists with Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The Rangers received training in different monitoring techniques and technologies, including baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS), which are a common fish-surveying tool. The diver-less method allows for long-term records of fish communities at each location. BRUVS are also the safest sampling method in the area because of the abundance of saltwater crocs and the large swings between high and low tide, which create strong currents. The Rangers are monitoring culturally important fish to better inform sea Country management. 🔗 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3wV8DWc This research is part of the Northern Australian Marine Monitoring Alliance (NAMMA) and is a partnership with Bardi Jawi Rangers and Traditional Owners, and the Kimberley Land Council. #BRUVS #MarineScience #Monitoring

🌿🌊 Exploring the Vitality of #MangroveForests: A #Satellite Perspective 🛰️🌏 Mangrove forests, the guardians of coastal #ecosystems, play a pivotal role in our planet's health. These lush green belts not only provide habitat to diverse marine life but also offer invaluable ecosystem services. Their importance cannot be overstated. Mangroves act as natural buffers against coastal erosion and storm surges, safeguarding communities from #naturaldisasters. They serve as #carbonsinks, absorbing atmospheric #CO2 and mitigating #climatechange. Moreover, they support local economies by providing livelihoods through #fisheries, #tourism, and #biodiversity. Satellites offer a bird's-eye view, enabling us to monitor mangrove #forests on a large scale. From tracking changes in their extent to assessing their health and detecting threats like deforestation and #pollution, satellites provide crucial data for #conservation efforts. With the power of satellite imagery and advanced analytics, we can better understand the dynamics of mangrove ecosystems, prioritize conservation actions, and advocate for their protection. Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
🐳 Grey whale thought to be extinct in the Atlantic Ocean for 200 years is spotted in Nantucket. Great news, right? #cetaceans certainly need one, especially since, over the weekend, a dead North Atlantic right whale was found stranded in Georgia. The calf was soon identified as the injured 2024 calf of Juno, right whale #1612. In early January, the calf was spotted with serious injuries to its head and mouth from a vessel strike. On the one hand, it is very hopeful news since gray whales vanished from the Atlantic Ocean in the 18th century due to whaling. On the other hand, it is an effect of the changing climate. Northwest Passage (yes, that Northwest Passage fans of Erebus and Terror), which connects the Atlantic and Pacific through the Arctic Ocean in Canada, has regularly been ice-free in the summertime in recent years. The speed at which ice is melting is in no way good news. So, is it good news or bad news? I believe this mainly shows how incredible marine life is. Did you know, for example, that at the end of February, more than 100 possible new #marine species were discovered in a single deepsea expedition? This should lead us to realise what experts have been saying for a very long time - we don't know as much as we should about #marinelife. We only knew a little before, and now #climatechange is changing everything. Yet, we interfere with the biodiversity of the Ocean without second-guessing ourselves. Bottom throwling, #seamining, maritime transport connected to underwater noise and other forms of #pollution are only a few parts of the problem. But what we know and should remember is that the #ocean should not be conquered. It should be protected. It can recover if given a chance. Life can return to places from which it was violently taken. The grey whale is an example. Hopefully, more will follow. P.S.: Latin name is of Eschrichtius robustus. Grey and Gray are both used to name this whale. Grey is connected to the colour of the whale, and Gray is connected to British zoologist J. E. Gray. Otherwise used to be known as "devilfish" (gosh, such a Moby Dick vibe).
