🏃♂️𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗦!📊 One of the main goals of the Waste2Place project is to develop new revegetation strategies to increase biodiversity and improve the long-term performance of geomorphic landforms. Regarding that, a key task designed for WP4 was to collect reference data on common nature types in northern Sweden to be used as reference for revegetation strategies on geomorphic landforms.🏞️🌱 In order to accomplish this task, Ecogain, one of our project partners, conducted an inventory of vegetation and soil class on three of the most common nature habitat types in northern Sweden: mountain heath, mountain birch forest and pine-dominated mixed coniferous forest. 🌲🌿 This inventory took place from June 2023 up to April 2024, and reference data was collected in sample plots located on and near the mountain Ylinenlaki situated about 8 kilometers east-southeast of Svappavaara. In each of the sample plots they measured a number of different variables related to the tree layer, shrub layer, field layer and bottom layer, including also soil characteristics. 📊✏️ The information gathered during this inventory is going to be used as a basis to design the revegetation plan and actions for the Svappavaara test site, that will start this summer. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on Waste2Place project! The work in Waste2Place project has been carried out within the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation, a joint venture by Vinnova, Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development and the Swedish Energy Agency. #waste2place #geomorphicdesign #landscape #mineplanning #minescheduling #mining #sustainability #closure #reclamation #biodiversity #ecologicalrecovery #innovation #minewaste

International Seabed Authority: Working for the benefit of the ocean, marine wildlife, and humanity. The ocean is a vastly important resource with an unfathomably large biodiversity. As humans look to take the minerals we need, it is up to organisations like ISA to ensure no harm comes to the marine environment. The seabed holds various materials that are becoming increasingly important for the green transition, such as copper, gold, manganese, cobalt, and more. As demand for such materials increases, it is not unreasonable to expect ventures to look to mining these marine environments. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is a UN-established international organisation dedicated to the monitoring and protection of global marine environments in mineral-resource-related activities. Innovation News Network Assistant Editor Matthew Brundrett sat down with Jaimie Abbott, MBA, GAICD, Communications Specialist at ISA to find out more about their work. Did you know that mosses eat and drink dust and water from the air? These incredible plants are the heroes of the re:moss project. Wondering what re:moss is all about....continue reading below re:moss is a research project with the work being carried out within the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation , a joint venture by Vinnova , Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development and Swedish Energy Agency. It is a technical innovation project for sustainable minerals and metals supply. The total budget is 2,836,41 SEK. This project uses native mosses, an essential component in ecosystem building and recovery, to restore post-mining landscapes. Specifically, the project will evaluate in an industry-relevant environment the combination of using off-site cultivated native moss species applied by hydroseeding with geomorphic design and current best practice revegetation methods for aiding and enhancing the restoration and re-naturing process of post-mining landscapes. These three components, large-scale moss cultivation and propagation, geomorphic design and best practice vegetation establishment, specifically address mining operations' impact on topography, vegetation, and ecosystem. They are aligned and optimized to secure a faster restoration process, supporting the mining sector in this essential but challenging step. By combining the proposed technologies and solutions, the project aims to bring a new dimension essential to successful ecological restoration but often overlooked, biocrust formation. Biocrust formation is an essential first step for ecosystem recovery, and this project aims to accelerate the ecological restoration of post-mining landscapes by targeting specific components in the biocrust restoration - the mosses. Stay tuned to the coming posts as we dive into the problem, the solution, and the project team. #mining #sustainability #innovation
