We know many health professionals who are interested in the idea of digital mental health are reluctant to get involved in the use of these resources due to concerns over reliability, efficacy and safety for their clients. For those people we have some really good news! In late 2022 the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Healthcare launched a process of accreditation for digital mental health care tools and resources. The new standards help take the guesswork out of choosing a digital mental health service, allowing us to focus on how to use them in practice! Great to see Mental Health Care for all being supported by NSW Health. It'll be great when accessible Mental Health Care is built into and funded for all people living with complex chronic diseases such as #IBD (Crohn's and Colitis) and other #IMIDs. Currently there are significant care gaps despite good evidence that Mental Health care improves patient outcomes, reduces hopsital care needs and saves money....... Why do we still see such delays in translating care into practice? Why are health funding models so refractory to change when new information arises?

The Mental Health Act reforms the 1983 act!! There is also a focus on providing 'mental health the same attention and focus as physical health'. With increased mental health support in schools. A majority of adults who live with mental illness first experienced levels of distress when they were young adults. Becoming adults who require a trauma informed approach where one ensures practices don't retraumatise but aid recovery. Dr Bessel Van der Kolk states in his book, The Body Keeps the Score, that ‘Trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.’ However when a child has more adults in their life that they trust and build secure relationships with then Adverse Childhood Experiences reduce. Thus this reform helps children have access to the support they need to cope through their mental health journey. We can see this is a step towards reduction in the stigma surrounding mental health. I wish I grew up in an environment where my emotional well-being was valued as much as my academic experiences.
