Affordability challenges in Austin are hitting close to home—especially for our educators. A new report from Redfin reveals that teachers in the Austin metro area can afford just 59% of apartments and a staggering 1% of homes near schools. As the housing crisis deepens, it's crucial for policymakers to prioritize affordable housing solutions, particularly near schools. At the same time, we must address the long-standing underinvestment in teacher salaries. Our educators deserve both a livable wage and a place to call home. From 2021- "Escalating costs of living—including housing costs— (...) may prevent teachers, who have midlevel incomes, from moving to or staying in the area. This can be especially true for teachers working in high-poverty neighborhoods of increasingly unaffordable cities." --> "School districts and local governments interested in reducing turnover and growing the supply of teachers in urban schools might consider partnering to increase affordable housing closer to schools, offer housing stipends or low-cost loans, and make financial crisis grants available to teachers." JC: Housing proximity to schools as a workplace not only reinforces retention, but saves money and time on commuting costs, reduced environmental impact, and (probably) improved engagement in the school as a neighborhood, place-based institution. There are two major factors influencing the appreciation of the housing market in the greater Boston area: the quality of the school district and the proximity to the city of Boston due to concentrated high-paying jobs in Boston and aged traffic infrastructure in the region. For many many years prior to Covid, the appreciation for towns with proximity to Boston (defined by Route 95) but without top schools (e.g. Woburn) overweight top school districts located further out around route 495 such as Towns Acton and Westford. Now the trend seems to be changing. .... https://lnkd.in/eb2jfkTF

This isn’t political—🗣️Pay Teachers More.🗣️ Providing “affordable housing” without significantly raising teacher wages is not a solution—it’s an act of keeping teachers impoverished. We should be empowering educators to independently create a future for themselves and their families, not just offering temporary fixes that don’t address the root issue. 💡What are your thoughts on how we can better support our teachers? https://lnkd.in/dm_rYmSf #PayTeachersMore #SupportEducators #EducationReform
