Correlated Solutions recently assisted in an important research project at the University of South Carolina with members of Austin R.J. Downey's research group who are investigating the degradation parameters of rapidly discharging Lithium-ion batteries. In some cases – especially in defense and aerospace applications – it is necessary to push battery performance to extreme limits. Dr. Downey’s team, working in the ARTS lab (Adaptive Real-Time Systems) at the USC College of Engineering and Computing, are using the VIC-3D digital correlation system in conjunction with the NHR 9200 battery test system to investigate the material characteristics of an 18650 2500mAh 20A battery as it rapidly discharges. This video provides an overview of the test from the DIC perspective. Recently, The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies released a series of policy papers, The Quantum Advantage: Why it Matters and Essential Next Steps. The three papers, written by Senior Resident Fellow Heather Penney, outline the science behind quantum technology (QIST), the promise of quantum computing, and how to operationalize a quantum advantage. Key takeaways include: 💫 Quantum capabilities could constitute a leap ahead to a new regime of competition, subverting adversary countermeasures, technologies, and strategies 🔬 A quantum-based acquisition program of record is urgently needed to transition quantum tech beyond the lab—current DoD small business programs are ill-suited for quantum startup needs 🇦🇺 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 To fully leverage the potential of AUKUS to accelerate QIST, the US government and DoD must address policy and regulatory obstacles such as Buy America, ITAR, and FMS As a startup working on quantum tech, we’re optimistic about seeing these important conversations continue between government and industry partners. BIG boost for Illinois to become the nation's quantum hub as Gov. JB Pritzker and Intersect Illinois announced the launch of the Quantum Proving Ground in collaboration with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This collaboration represents a major investment from DARPA and its federal partners, matched by the State of Illinois, over the next five years to test and evaluate quantum computing. DARPA has a proven history of making crucial early investments in cutting-edge technologies at the earliest stages, such as the internet. Quantum is the next major shift in computing — exponentially faster and far more secure than current technology — which can accelerate drug discovery and biopharmaceutical cures for diseases. Last week Scientists from the University of Birmingham and Dstl departed the UK to continue the next phase of #quantum experiments that could pave the way for advanced positioning and navigation tools at Sea. The cold atom manipulation and atom interferometry experiments will seek to evaluate the effects of ship vibration, motion, and acceleration onboard Hurst Point, operated by FORELAND SHIPPING LTD. The outcome of this phase, which utilises NavyPODS, is to demonstrate extended operation at sea, and to understand and improve the underpinning atomic performance. This work will lay further foundations to leverage quantum mechanics for extremely accurate positioning and navigation tools of the future, non-reliant on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (#GNSS). The University of Birmingham project lead Prof. Michael Holynski stated: “We are excited to be leading this project which could pave the way for enhanced quantum capability for the Royal Navy. Building upon developments in the UK National Quantum Technology Programme, including projects funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Dstl and Innovate UK, this next phase of trials will provide the team with valuable insight into future real-world applications at Sea, and the associated challenges this presents.” Chester Butterworth, Deputy CTO, MOD Project Lead added: “The convergence of the traditional sciences with quantum phenomena will greatly disrupt conventional technology across many operational capability areas, causing evolutionary and revolutionary change. Quantum technologies have the potential to solve some of Defense’s most pressing problems, improve our operational advantage, and pave the way to new yet realised opportunities. In this experiment, we are advancing novel navigational techniques towards a fully resilient satellite free capability.” The Chief Technology Officer, Jaimie Roylance OBE, supported by the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) seek to capitalise on the burgeoning strength of UK quantum research to accelerate the applicability and readiness of Quantum Technology for Maritime applications. By synthesising and working in collaboration with the partners such as the UK Quantum Technology Hub Sensors and Timing, Innovate UK, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and Dstl, the Royal Navy will conduct, and support maritime relevant research, development, and experiments. The OCTO team aim to bridge the valley of death or pivot early, incubating high value opportunities to accelerate the Royal Navy on a pathway towards alternative, highly precise, #quantumtechnologies of the future. Why not follow Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO), and stay up to date with future developments. #defencetechnology #pnt #navypods
