In September, the Western Reserve Port Authority board of directors voted to acquire City Centre One, where its offices are located, and the nearby Commerce Building for $6 million – an acquisition that in any other year likely would have been the most significant downtown Youngstown news story.
Port authority officials see their purchase of the office buildings from Ohio One Corp. less as deviating from previous practices than capitalizing on opportunities.
“This one’s a unique approach to what we do. Because what we do is all about productivity and development and what’s good for the economics of the community,” says Anthony Trevena, port authority executive director.
We do things on the outskirts, but we really want to commit to our urban centers and make sure that they're redeveloped and they make a comeback. And we believe it's going on right now. businessjournaldaily.com 3 minutes with is brought to you by Farmers National Bank. Save, borrow and invest with farmers. Take heart knowing you're helping create a strong community. Mind your money at farmers. Talk directly to local decision makers about your loans, investments and insurance. Farmers fiercely local, fiercely loyal. The investments that the Port Authority has made over the years. You know, I think we've always said that, you know the properties that government can love and there's been. The only government can love. Yeah, You know, and we look at the different real estate holdings that we've acquired, even this recent one in Austintown, actually, it sat on the market since COVID. So in that transaction, and again, other ones were on the market for eight years and 10 years and so forth. You know, this one's a unique approach to what we do because what we do is all about productivity and development and what's good for the economics of the community. The Mills family, it's no secret, was very selective in their process of that particular their buildings and their legacy. And we honor that. And there's 48 tenants in these buildings and many of them have been in these buildings for, you know, for many decades. And there's stalwart committed to the downtown Youngstown area. And with so many things that had taken place, you know, that, you know, whether it was the explosion to, you know, other things downtown that the concerns of stability of the region, Our board just really thought it was appropriate for us to look at this from a different perspective on how we can help stabilize this part of the community. Eastern Gateway is literally our neighbor as we look out the window here and with their closure, just those concerns and we certainly want to do anything that would potentially jeopardize those 48 tenants that have been in this building. Our role as an economic development. You've got Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, you've got the Chamber of Commerce, you have Lake, the river, you have the foundation, you have the land banks and you've got again, stalwart community leader pillar companies in here as well. So when Lake to River brings in. Site selectors, they're going to bring them to this building and they're going to be able to meet with chamber executives and Eastgate executives and port executives and anybody on the team that can help get a deal done. So there's another part of this to be considered is the fact that this is kind of like a one stop shop for economic development within this building. And almost all of us are all regional in the sense that we serve both Mahoning and Trumbull counties. So you could have a meeting now. In the last couple of years, it's been great. I might have a meeting on three or four different floors regarding economic development projects. It's our commitment to the Mahoning Valley, to economic development, to this region, to being supportive of our downtown corridors. You know, we're big fans of the fact that if you don't have a strong core downtown in your urban communities, you know that you can't grow on the outside as well. So anything we can do to help with Warren, we're helping with the Peninsula project in downtown Warren, obviously working with the Kimberly-Clark project in Warren and the city of Youngstown. We have the Mcguffey Holdings as well as these properties. So we do things on the outskirts, but we really want to commit to our urban centers and make sure that they're redeveloped and they make a comeback. And we believe it's going on right now. We're always looking at what opportunities we can do to keep a building and productive use or put it back into productive use. So we're looking at the future of what might happen in the Eastern Gateway community buildings. We obviously have a vested interest in those expansion of, you know, what we're looking at to help with the peninsula further development. So yeah, if there's a property that's either not in productive development at this time or needs repurposed or we can help in some sense. The private sector is not in that particular case, you know, taking on that project. We're going to try and find those and help turn them around. businessjournaldaily.com 3 minutes with is brought to you by Farmers National Bank. Save, borrow and invest with farmers. Take heart knowing you're helping create a strong community. Mind your money at farmers. Talk directly to local decision makers about your loans, investments and insurance. Our London & Thames Valley business was joined by public sector clients and consultants this morning in an insightful roundtable discussion looking at how we unlock residential delivery across the local authority landscape.
The discussion, chaired by Cratus Group, focused on the challenges of reaching the delivery phase of schemes, the advantages of collaborative partnerships, and the importance of embedding sustainability as a standard practice.
The conversation was an opportunity to highlight how bringing contractors to the table early can help develop robust solutions for complex, constrained sites while identifying opportunities for carbon reduction throughout the project lifecycle. We discussed sites like our Colville Estate project for the London Borough of Hackney, where Kier’s in-house expertise is delivering 93 new homes in east London. We'd like to extend a huge thanks to all participants for engaging. It was a very energetic conversation with real tangible calls to action that we look forward to following up on. Stay tuned for our upcoming white paper, which will capture key takeaways from the roundtable and outline what more needs to be done to enable critical delivery.

Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce CEO Paul Britton joined a major policy announcement at the iconic Pinewood Group Limited earlier this morning, where the Prime Minster delivered his 'Plan for Change' speech.
Paul said: "The announcement of 150 infrastructure projects stood out, and we will be lobbying to make the case for Western Rail Access to Heathrow and other digital, road and rail improvements. Hitting these milestones is going to require outstanding execution to make change happen and this is where it has faltered in the past."

It's been five years since the York Central masterplan successfully gained planning consent, and it's a project that we at Aberfield are immensely proud to have played a key role in alongside our partners, Homes England, City of York Council, Network Rail and the National Railway Museum.
We delivered the communications and engagement across the project from access consultations and the final masterplan 'Festival of York Central' consultation, through branding, stakeholder engagement, PR, social and issues management.
It was also the start of our ongoing journey with transformational schemes in York, which includes working with York Minster (Chapter of York) on the adoption of its Neighbourhood Plan, the first of its kind to be used to map the future care of a cathedral or heritage estate, and the innovative regeneration of Coney Street Riverside by the Helmsley Group.
We love working on projects like these for the lasting impact they deliver to communities. So it's great to see the plans coming forward for York Central from McLaren Property | Living | Regeneration and Arlington Real Estate and see how that masterplan is now becoming a physical reality in the city.
It's now critical that strategic communications plays a further role in the next phase of York Central's development, so its importance and significance to the city, the region and the North isn't overlooked.
