As we reflect on the long and rich history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, it's important to recognize and celebrate the contributions, cultures, and achievements of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. At the Canadian Club Toronto, we want to take this day as an opportunity to acknowledge and promote the successes and challenges of Indigenous communities and groups. It is crucial to continue the conversation about the past, present, and future of Indigenous peoples in Canada and work towards reconciliation in a meaningful way. We honour the diversity of Indigenous cultures and traditions, and we recognize the skills and expertise of Indigenous peoples that contribute to the economic, social, and cultural prosperity of our country. We will continue to make efforts to engage in meaningful dialogue with Indigenous communities, recognize Indigenous cultures, and support Indigenous-led initiatives. This week is Unity Week, a time to celebrate the diversity and strength of Canada's Indigenous peoples. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges and opportunities for economic reconciliation in this country. Economic reconciliation means empowering Indigenous communities to shape their own futures and benefit from the wealth of their lands and resources. It means building partnerships based on respect, trust, and mutual benefit. It means closing the gaps in health, education, housing, and infrastructure that have plagued Indigenous peoples for too long. One of the ways we can achieve economic reconciliation is by supporting economic reconciliation initiatives that aim to create inter-generational wealth and sovereignty for Indigenous nations. Project Reconciliation is championing and supporting the Indigenous ownership of the Trans Mountain Corporation with a vision to use a percentage of the profits, based on community direction, to fund an Indigenous Sovereign Wealth Fund. This fund would invest in low-carbon energy projects (possibly through #RETI), social programs, and infrastructure for Indigenous communities across Canada. Project Reconciliation is not just about owning a pipeline asset. It is about creating a new model of Indigenous economic development that is inclusive, sustainable, and respectful of the environment and the rights of Indigenous peoples. It is about transforming a divisive issue into a unifying opportunity. It is about making reconciliation a reality. To learn more about Project Reconciliation: https://lnkd.in/gYegxByj Let's join them in making Unity Week a meaningful and lasting celebration of Indigenous economic reconciliation. #UnityWeek #EconomicReconciliation #ProjectReconciliation

Doing better than indigenous fatigue starts with asking yourself what your role is in Truth and Reconciliation. We are all treaty partners, and yes the government has a lot of work to do. But so do the rest of you as, Canadian Society. And it starts with being uncomfortable with Canada's truth, because without staring directly at the truth, we cannot begin meaningful reconciliation. The government has a responsibility to do better, but so do you, you cannot just mourn, and then have indigenous fatigue - you need to do better both, individually, as a settler, and collectively as a settler Nation. Everyone has a role to play in Truth and Reconciliation and since the government isn't stepping up, the people must. When you reach out to indigenous businesses, asking them to minimize the time it takes to educate you, don't tell them you don't have the time. Indigenous people have never been given the time or a voice, now we are! Make the time. Free 30-minute consultation to discuss booking a Cultural competency training workshop for your company, group, or organization. https://lnkd.in/ghqrhZwW Because that is what Truth and Reconciliation is about. Which is also in the 94 calls to action. #raise #mmiwawareness #culturalcompetency #unique #diversityinclusionequity #indigenousbusiness #indigenouswomen #inclusivity #culturalawareness #culturalsensitivity #listeningandlearning #openmindedness #people #education #crossculturalawareness #training #ally #allyship #middlemanagement #canada #ontario #schools #financeandeconomy #businessandmanagement #businessandleadership #communitydevelopment #experience #landdevelopment #land #landacknowledgements #didyouknow #rightsandtitle #equality #truthandreconciliation #trc

As National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches, we need to look back at lessons from Canada's history, but also look ahead at how we can make outcomes for Indigenous communities better now and in the future. Are our policies truly uplifting Indigenous peoples? This day is more than a moment of reflection. It's a call to action. Here are 4 main challenges that have been highlighted by our experts: 1️⃣ #DigitalColonialism: A modern form of exploitation, where data is extracted and commodified without proper consent or benefit to Indigenous communities. 2️⃣ #CapitalAccess: There’s a glaring lack of access to capital for Indigenous projects. 3️⃣ #YouthBarriers: Indigenous youth in remote First Nations communities face severe barriers to employment and education due to isolation, lack of resources, and systemic obstacles, often leading to disillusionment and abandonment of their aspirations. 4️⃣ #DoubleStandards: The requirements to qualify as an Indigenous business are far more rigorous than for any other. Reconciliation isn’t just a checkbox. Are we ready to take substantial, bold actions, or are we going to keep hiding behind empty rhetoric? Happy Indigenous Peoples Day! Today and every day, we’re thankful for the incredible contribution of Indigenous individuals in all areas of life and work across so-called Canada. We celebrate the rich history, cultures, and traditions of the Indigenous nations on whose land we are fortunate to be able to live, work, and play. And we would like to take a moment to acknowledge that Mt. Rinear Painting exists on the traditional and unceded territories of the Stó:lō people and the Máthexwi (Matsqui) and Semá:th (Sumas) nations who have lived in S’ólh Téméxw (the Fraser Valley) since time immemorial. We respect the longstanding relationships that Indigenous Nations have with this land and acknowledge the honour it is to live and work here. We are committed to reconciliation in action through ongoing learning about Indigenous and First Nations cultures, traditions, and experiences. For more information about educating yourself and others about Indigenous history, we invite you to check out the First Nations University of Canada's Continuing Education courses at https://buff.ly/4bbfjO4 or check out the work of Renee Linklater, Decolonizing Trauma Work. Message from our Founder: "As a non-Indigenous person, I strive to learn and educate myself to be more understanding and inclusive. Our goal is to incorporate a culture of ongoing learning, equity, and inclusion into the culture of Mount Rinear Painting. Indigenous Peoples Day is not just one day to celebrate Indigenous people. It's an opportunity to shift our perspectives, educate ourselves and work toward year-round change. More recognition. More inclusion. More acknowledgement. More education. More ownership of mistakes and past grievances. Less ignorance equals more love and more reconciliation. Let's all be better." #nipd2024 #indigenouspeoplesday #reconciliation

This #IDW2024, we are in Ottawa for Cooperation Canada’s #HillDay, engaging with parliamentarians to ensure that international cooperation and Canadian leadership are priorities in 2024. Our message was united and clear: the world we have taken for granted for decades is being disrupted. And not in small ways. The basic pillars of democracy are being undermined, humanitarian needs are on the rise, hard-won rights are under attack, and we are witnessing the reversal of decades of progress in development, especially for the world’s most vulnerable. In 2024, Canada must step up, show global leadership, and make vital and strategic investments in international assistance. These investments are essential for responding to the immense global needs, advancing our own strategic interests, and positioning Canada in the world we want to see for generations to come. We must do this because it is the right thing to do, but also because it is the smart thing to do. We look forward to working together to carry this momentum forward. #CanPoli #GoForTheGoals Cooperation Canada Fairtrade Canada Habitat for Humanity Canada Société de coopération pour le développement international (SOCODEVI)
