Featured in Piling Canada, we’re proud to share the story of how our Canadian admixture plants have completed their Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)—a crucial step toward more sustainable construction practices. An EPD provides a transparent look at a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle, from raw materials to disposal. This accomplishment reflects our commitment to innovation and reducing our carbon footprint. 🌍 The Benefits of ESG Protocols for Asphalt Plants in Canada (Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association 2025 conference) As the construction industry evolves, sustainability and environmental responsibility are becoming critical priorities. At the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association 2025 Conference, Mate Jurkin from The Miller Group delivered an insightful presentation on Carbon Footprint, EPDs, and Internal Reviews, emphasizing the growing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) protocols. For asphalt plants in Canada, adopting ESG protocols offers significant benefits: ✅ Reduced Carbon Footprint: By implementing sustainable practices and leveraging tools like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), asphalt plants can measure and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to Canada’s climate goals. ✅ Operational Efficiency: ESG strategies encourage optimization of energy use and materials, reducing waste and lowering production costs without compromising quality. ✅ Improved Reputation: Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability enhances trust among stakeholders, from local communities to government regulators and project partners. ✅ Market Competitiveness: Customers and project owners increasingly prioritize ESG-compliant suppliers. Asphalt plants that align with these expectations gain a competitive edge in securing contracts. ✅ Regulatory Compliance: ESG protocols help plants stay ahead of evolving regulations and standards, ensuring long-term operational viability. Mate Jurkin's presentation highlighted the role of internal reviews in ensuring transparency and accountability in ESG implementation, providing a clear path for asphalt plants to achieve measurable results. By embracing ESG protocols, the asphalt industry can lead the way in sustainable construction, balancing environmental stewardship with economic growth. #Sustainability #ESG #CarbonFootprint #AsphaltIndustry #OSSGA2025 #EnvironmentalResponsibility #EPDs

The adage "Never let a good crisis go to waste." is widely attributed to Winston Churchill but this is likely untrue. It was Rahm Emanuel, chief of staff to former US president Barack Obama, who said it – about the global financial crisis. “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” “And what I mean by that is, it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” Whatever the origins of the quote, there is no question that following the recent media investigation, the construction industry in Australia is in crisis or, perhaps more accurately, a bigger crisis than that outlined in Australian Constructors Association (ACA) 2022 Disrupt or Die report, and this is a crisis that we absolutely cannot afford to waste! That is why next week's meeting in Melbourne of a reinvigorated National Construction Industry Forum (NCIF) is so important. The NCIF brings together the three key industry stakeholder groups - Government, Industry and Unions - that are able to instigate meaningful change . For my part, I will be encouraging all these groups to work together to develop a plan to create a more sustainable industry. Hopefully, 16 October 2024 will be become a red-letter day for the construction industry in Australia. To use a real quote from the Big Man "Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts." #movementforchange

The new Fast Track Approvals bill is now officially law. I'm most pleased about the number of new green-field residential developments that have been given the green light to proceed. Now, don't think that this is going to solve all of our problems with regard to building houses or housing affordability...far from it...but its a start. Providing certainty of supply of land for the next 5 to 10 years is will give the construction market confidence of supply... ...but its not enough, we need more. Many of the projects "approved" will take 2 to 3 years before we see ground works, and another couple of years beyond that before we see houses being built. What about the infrastructure to service these new developments...where is the planning to support this? This is a great step forward...but, please, lets keep going.

Construction generates a lot of waste with estimates of over 30% going to landfill on a typical job. To reduce costs, improve the life cycle of building materials, and ensure the industry’s environmental impact is as low as it can be, it is important to choose materials that have long life spans and are from manufacturers who have detailed how best to treat their products when it does come to the building’s end of life, as part of sustainable construction objectives. You can find this in our End of Life guide which is free to download: https://zurl.co/ZaKg #BuildingEnvelope #WasteManagement #Demolition
