Today is World Ocean Day, and we're supporting the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)'s global campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable fishing for our ocean's health. At Raptis, we are proud to reflect on our significant contributions to ocean conservation. In 2015, we were part of a groundbreaking initiative with the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF), collaborating closely with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, CSIRO, and other fishing partners. Together, we developed the "Tom's fisheye" bycatch reduction device, which has been instrumental in reducing bycatch by an impressive 44%. By 2020, every vessel in the NPF was equipped with Tom's fisheye, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to protect marine life and promote sustainable fishing practices. We remain committed to fostering innovation and working collaboratively with industry partners and scientific communities to ensure the health and sustainability of our oceans for future generations. The Med Sea Alliance, and our members from Oceana in Europe, Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Global Fishing Watch and The Nature Conservancy were pleased to attend the 17th Session of the Compliance Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (#GFCM) this month at the United Nations FAO. Despite significant advancements in our #conservation efforts, the #Mediterranean remains under immense pressure. Overfishing and illegal fishing pose major threats, endangering the sea's unique biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities dependent on these fisheries. Med Sea Alliance members are pushing for reforms at the level of the GFCM. Last year, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, and The Nature Conservancy pushed for a compliance mechanism to hold countries accountable for their conservation commitments under this Regional Fisheries Management Organization. This was supposed to start in 2025 but the timeline has been delayed as of this meeting. We are determined to ensure its timely implementation. Our members, notably Global Fishing Watch are also supporting advanced technologies like Remote Electronic Monitoring (#REM) to improve transparency, compliance, and scientific research.
