Smart Fisheries Collaboration with WWF 🌏Client/Collaborators: WWF 📍 Location: United Kingdom 📅 Year: 2021  🔄 Project: Climate Smart Fisheries MarFishEco collaborated with WWF, RSPB, and MCS to summarize the latest scientific knowledge regarding blue carbon, fishing impacts and the potential role of the UK's fishing industry in addressing climate change. Here's a glimpse into the 2021 study’s vital insights: * Fisheries have a dual role in climate change.  * The distribution and recruitment of some fish stocks are changing with a changing climate.  *Carbon emissions from fishing, notably bottom trawling and burning fuel have climate impacts. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has designated March 1st as World Seagrass Day! Did you know? Seagrass is a true flowering plant that can live in the sea. Seagrass meadows are important for supporting commercial fisheries, as they provide habitat, feeding grounds, and spawning grounds for various marine life. Not only that, seagrass has the ability to absorb carbon and stabilize sediment! What can you do? Conserving seagrass is important for maintaining the stability of the 3 pillars of the marine ecosystem. You can help by reducing your use of single-use plastics, not littering in rivers and the sea, supporting organizations that focus on seagrass conservation, and of course, you can spread the word about the importance of seagrass to others. Tuna is a source of food, jobs, and livelihoods across the world. But tuna stocks are threatened by climate change, with potentially severe consequences for the people who depend on it. Shark and Ray Awareness Day, celebrated around the world, is a great way to dispel some of the misconceptions surrounding sharks and rays. These extraordinary creatures are often misunderstood. Sharks and rays are an important part of a healthy eco system. Sharks serve as apex predators, helping to control the balance of marine species and ensuring ecological stability. Removing sharks and rays from the marine ecosystem would have devastating consequences, disrupting the balance of marine life, and threatening the health of our well-managed fisheries. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) ensures fishing in Commonwealth waters is sustainably managed by limiting catch, restricting how many boats can fish, and regulating what gear they can use and where. This includes measures specifically designed to mitigate incidental bycatch of shark and ray species. 🦈 Mitigation measures minimise the chance of an interaction with sharks and rays, and, if this still occurs, minimise any harm.
