The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water recently undertook public consultation on the Draft National Roadmap for protecting and conserving at least 30% of Australia’s land by 2030.    SLR considers the Draft National Roadmap to be a great step in identifying the process for protecting the unique ecological heritage of this continent. Oceans, islands and action on the agenda of our meeting with Peter Thomson the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the #Ocean. Our Island Conservation delegation is very grateful for Ambassador Thomson’s time today and a rich discussion on UN Ocean Conference preparations, UN Biodiversity #COP16 in Cali, key mechanisms to integrate #conservation of #nature and sustainable use of #biodiversity, and the role holistic island restoration can play as a nature based solution to the triple threat of depleted #ocean health, #biodiversity loss and #ClimateChange. #IslandConservation reiterated our willingness to contribute to tangible outcomes across those areas and, among others, proposed a #UN Decade of Island Restoration as a vehicle for galvanising funds, action and solutions.

Are global policies enough to support Blue Carbon? 💧 Blue Carbon ecosystems like mangroves, seagrass, and tidal marshes are crucial for climate action and biodiversity conservation. With over 130 countries having these ecosystems, nearly 60 have included them in their climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. International efforts, such as the UNFCCC, CBD, and the Ramsar Convention, highlight the importance of protecting these vital carbon sinks. By integrating Blue Carbon initiatives, businesses can align with global sustainability targets, enhance environmental stewardship, and foster community resilience. The European Council's draft Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 raises significant concerns regarding biodiversity and climate action. Of concern is the lack of consideration of biodiversity and the minimal focus on climate change, which is shifted primarily to adaptation measures. These decisions have far-reaching implications as they not only shape EU policy, but also influence the allocation of funds under the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). IFAW calls on Member States to address these issues and incorporate a stronger EU commitment to the environment in the agenda of the next political term. The European Union must ensure that nature-based solutions and conservation efforts are prioritised to protect our planet's biodiversity and tackle the urgent challenges of climate change. Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) are a promising set of solutions which can reduce global carbon emissions and, in some instances, also reduce biodiversity loss. Human society can no longer afford to choose between its progress and environmental sustainability. Today, the imperative is clear: The world must invest in and work with nature to address both the climate and biodiversity crises, for the sake of current and future generations.
