The European Council's draft Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 raises significant concerns regarding biodiversity and climate action. Of concern is the lack of consideration of biodiversity and the minimal focus on climate change, which is shifted primarily to adaptation measures. These decisions have far-reaching implications as they not only shape EU policy, but also influence the allocation of funds under the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). IFAW calls on Member States to address these issues and incorporate a stronger EU commitment to the environment in the agenda of the next political term. The European Union must ensure that nature-based solutions and conservation efforts are prioritised to protect our planet's biodiversity and tackle the urgent challenges of climate change. We will continue to follow these developments closely. #Environment #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water recently undertook public consultation on the Draft National Roadmap for protecting and conserving at least 30% of Australia’s land by 2030. SLR considers the Draft National Roadmap to be a great step in identifying the process for protecting the unique ecological heritage of this continent. We are pleased to have submitted our comments for review, highlighting a few key areas where deficiencies in the document limit it's effectiveness as a tool for helping SLR, and the businesses we partner with, to be able to deliver on Australia's Global Biodiversity Framework commitments. The proof will be in delivery but we welcome the inclusion of a Natural Environment Bill within the latest Programme for Government in Scotland - last week was a huge moment for nature and biodiversity. The Scottish Government has outlined its ambition to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and to reverse it by 2045. They have committed to introduce a Natural Environment Bill to set legally binding nature recovery targets and to create a framework for monitoring, enforcing, and reporting on targets. Establishing these targets will also help to mainstream the protection and enhancement of the natural environment, holding current and future governments to account to deliver for nature. The scale of the nature and climate crises require a shift in society’s interactions with nature. Recent cuts to nature funding make action to protect biodiversity in Scotland more crucial than ever. The latest State of Nature report revealed that 1 in 9 Scottish species now face the risk of extinction, and globally Scotland ranks in the bottom 25% of nations in terms of its biodiversity intactness. Our natural environment needs action starting now and lasting into the future, so this crucial piece of legislation is a significant milestone which represents the level of ambition required to turn things around. This is a promising update to be able to share in advance of the Convention on Biological Diversity - COP16. At the forthcoming conference, the Governments of the UK have a chance to show leadership and set out the ambitious actions they will take on global nature commitments that have so far only been made on paper. It will also be important for the Scottish Government to quickly get back on track on climate change with much more action to reduce emissions. #Scotland #Nature #Biodiversity

UNDP Azerbaijan continues its informative “Towards COP29” video series that aims awareness-raising on climate change mitigation and environmental protection. Today, Ms. Alessandra Roccasalvo, the UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Azerbaijan, talks about biodiversity, the animal and plant kingdom. Biodiversity is a whole ecosystem, so we do not know what will happen if we are losing different parts of it. Therefore, as part of the global biodiversity framework, we must protect the species of plants and animals that we have in the country. #TowardsCOP29 #COP29 #ClimateChange #ClimatePromise #ClimateAction #sustainablefuture
