Rent is at an all-time high and access to housing is at an all-time low. For the most vulnerable Aussies, it’s a soul-crushing combination. Something has to to change, or Australians will continue to face homelessness and hunger. It shouldn’t be this way. Until the system changes to look after everyone, your support is vital. You’re helping our services be there for thousands of people when they need us most — giving them essentials, food and a safe place to stay. Thank you. #Salvos #TheSalvationArmy #RedShieldAppeal #HousingCrisis

I hear it so often... that there is no housing because of those from "other countries coming over and taking all the housing". Those from other countries are not "taking the housing". There is not enough housing full stop. In actual fact, my experience is those that flee their country due to war, violence, persecution would love to "return to their home country" to be with their support networks, families and safe. Most did not plan to have to leave all they have ever known to find a safe haven, a.k.a some temporary accommodation, where they are then given leave to remain and told to leave the accommodation in 28 days and be street homeless. The fact homelessness is rising is not a surprise; the cost of living, section 21 no fault evictions, not to mention the asylum process. Government policy fighting against the government target to end homelessness at its finest! 🙄 Policy must consider cross departmental impact if any policy is to be successful. https://lnkd.in/edHX-Kin

Last month, the Chancellor took a crucial step to stop rising homelessness by ending the Local Housing Allowance freeze, ensuring families can afford to rent more homes in their local area. However, we need the change now - waiting until next April will leave many struggling families with the threat of homelessness hanging over them. The Government must unfreeze #HousingBenefit immediately to give people a vital #safetynet this winter. I am a fierce advocate for Shelter First, I truly believe it is the single most important and crucial step at this time to provide stability, safety, security and access to services for those who are homeless. It is important to also point out that this is a transitional step whilst housing stock scrambles to catch up, but once it does, it facilitates an easier pathway towards getting our people back in a home. We do have a national emergency when it comes to homelessness and we should afford the sector the powers of disaster management and the appropriate levels of funding to allow a quick response to mobilise shelters - like we can in times of natural disaster. The mental and physical toll homelessness is having on our people is unimaginable and will have far reaching consequences now and in to the future. We should be doing everything within our powers to make sure no one is left outside and suffering. Governments need to step outside their comfort zones and get comfortable with imperfect solutions - it is better in my view to take the risk on helping our people rather than taking the risk not to help our people. It is better to have tried, than to have not tried at all. #homelessness #nationalemergency #queensland #australia #disastermanagement #advocacy #nooneleftoutside #shelterfirst

Today, I was pleased to speak to a Private Member's Bill from my MPP, the Ontario NDP's Bhutila Karpoche, that would establish a provincial Homelessness Task Force. If passed into law, the Task Force — composed of advocates, front-line workers, and people who are homeless — would utilize its expertise to inform a human rights-compliant provincial homelessness strategy. It's clear that the government's actions to date are not working, and that we are spending substantial resources on an uncoordinated effort to manage homelessness, not end it. The best way forward is for those who know what the solutions are to shape a provincial strategy. This isn't an added layer of bureaucracy; it's meaningful engagement with communities of expertise to ensure that Ontario will implement tangible, sustainable positive solutions to the homelessness crisis.

As pandemic-era rental assistance and eviction protections expire, the housing burden on ALICE households (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) in New York State is becoming increasingly severe. In 2022: 🏘️ 68% of NY households were rent-burdened, paying over 30% of their income on rent. 🏘️ 44% were severely rent-burdened, paying a staggering 50% or more of their income on rent. With rising costs of living and the loss of crucial support systems, many ALICE families are now at risk of housing insecurity and potential homelessness. 🏡 In 2023, the housing crisis has become an undeniable reality, touching every corner of society. The struggle is real, with demand far exceeding the available supply. Bold decisions and courageous policies are needed to address this issue at its core. Homelessness is not a choice; it's an unintended consequence of a system we've constructed. But if we built it once, we can rebuild it, placing the concept of shelter as a fundamental human right at its heart. ❤️ Here at the Foundation, we are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that every young Australian has a safe and secure place to sleep. It's a mission that demands collective action. Each of us can contribute, raising our voices to advocate for shelter as a right. As we start the new year, let's aim to provide shelter for the 44,000 young people who go to sleep every night without a safe haven. 🌟 Your support matters. Join with us at the Property Industry Foundation and play your part. Together, let's rewrite the narrative, making shelter a universal right for all in 2024. #HousingForAll #EndHomelessness #ShelterAsARight 🌈 Find out how to get involved << https://bit.ly/3NBfdpV

🚨RESEARCH ALERT. We’ve done the maths and found that building 90,000 social homes a year could end homelessness, save the taxpayer money, boost jobs, AND improve children’s life chances. And of course, it would give thousands of families the priceless security of a stable home. No more excuses. After decades of chronic underinvestment, the next government needs to #BuildSocialHousing. This report is good but needs a buddy report … This report shows how money can be pushed around and generate a financial benefit for the UK. It also shows improvements and benefits to well-being, health, education, crime, employment and homelessness, which are all fantastic. The buddy report needs to find the land or existing buildings that can be converted to create these new homes. It would also work up demographics to show the demand for this form of housing by location. #buildsocialhousing

L.A. County's 2024 Point In Time Count survey shows a 2% drop in the number of unhoused people living in the city! 👏 🏡 This noteworthy shift is a sign of reprioritization, starting with city and county officials declaring homelessness an emergency and followed by rent subsidies, housing vouchers, and eviction protections to keep families housed. Still, more can always be done. "Getting people into temporary housing and shelter is important. But moving people into permanent housing is what will make the homeless numbers go down significantly." Learn more and share this hopeful news from our neighboring county 🎉 https://lat.ms/3S8ULim
