We simply must break with traditional approaches to homelessness. We need to embrace imperfect shelter solutions to help people now and iterate them quickly to make improvements. Relying solely on building homes as the solution does not help the here and now neither does short term placement in hotels or motels. The issue grows and swells by the day, homes are not growing by the day to accommodate people. It is also obvious to me that hotels and motels are not working either - as we wouldn't have a problem if everyone was also in a hotel / motel room! Governments want to have "perfect" solutions, however until homes are built to accommodate our people we need a change and a shift in thinking as well as changing their view of risk. Leveraging our country's disaster management protocols and process with the funding to help the homelessness sector help our people now, it simply needs to happen across the country. We need the traditional approaches and non-traditional / imperfect solutions working together. We need to get our people into shelter first - we need to be looking at this issue so that no one is left outside. The simple and brutal reality of this - people are dying, people are struggling to survive and exist. We need to do better. We can do better. We know that activating our severe weather response protocols often results in harder work and longer hours for the service providers who expand their services. We are deeply thankful for your time, effort, and care in these times—especially over holiday weekends.     We also know that this is not the ideal state for the homelessness response system, which is why improvements are part of our 5-Year Plan.  

Every year, almost 40,000 young people reach out to homelessness services for assistance. The Federal Government needs to make the safety and wellbeing of this group a national priority. We proudly support the Home Time campaign to fix our housing system for children and young people with nowhere to live. New strategies are sorely needed to address the ongoing crisis: over 1,400 people are estimated to be facing homelessness in Anaheim. This is according to the latest Point In Time Count numbers, which show the highest number of unhoused people recorded in recent years. Proven solutions to #EndHomelessnessOC include lengthening eviction notification periods and requiring landlords to offer relocation aid when issuing no-fault evictions. We all want a home and to feel safe, and at this time of year we are acutely aware of the unfairness of street homelessness. In our communities in London, we are seeing record high levels of rough sleeping. A major factor in this is a sudden spike in homelessness amongst newly-granted refugees. That’s why this issue is a priority for Young Roots – both for our frontline staff working tirelessly to prevent street homelessness and in our policy and campaigning work. Yet more shameful statistics in the context of housing and homelessness. The fact is that these statistics are a consequence of underinvestment in housing on all fronts- policy making, planning, investment, delivery. Behind these statistics we risk losing a generation of potential, behind these statistics is a story of individual and familial pain and trauma not brought on by them but by the failure of a system, which is broken in so many places. It is no longer good enough to see housing as simply an enabler of other things, as a problem for down south, as an issue that impacts others. It needs a relentless focus from all sectors to fix and everyone needs to care. Also, kudos to all those housing teams working in local government, who very rarely get a mention, and are having to deal with navigating out of an impossible challenge. #longtermplanforhousing

If like me you feel saddened, angry and frustrated seeing our people suffer and die through the current homelessness disaster unfolding across Australia then we need to come together and unite in solidarity through visible activism & advocacy on mass and as a collective together to show we want change from our governments. My vision and purpose has always been to activate empty and under-utilised spaces and provide shelter first principles that look to change and save the lives of the homeless - I have never deviated from this and I am still committed to that even though I am no longer associated with Beddown (FYI - there are still many people that think I am still with Beddown, just for the record, I am not). Having empty spaces and places like Pinkenba, Wellcamp and others as examples that could have an immediate impact to the lives of many yet homelessness still grows, people in tents, in cars, on the street, sofa surfing etc. and not to mention the loss of life. We need change and funding for the sector to enable them to activate and operate spaces as we can do in times of natural disasters and to give people the basic human rights whilst an adequate housing stock is created. We need to do better, we need to do more for our people.
