Greggs PLC (LSE:GRG), the bakery chain, could post a strong fourth-quarter update on Wednesday 10 January if results from Lidl and Aldi are anything to go off. Although overall consumer spending data during the festive period failed to grow on 2022 figures, discount supermarkets Lidl and Aldi reported some of their best sales periods ever. Analysts at Liberum believe this could provide a positive read across to other discount retailers like Greggs, B&M and Primark owner Associated British Foods. Greggs will have the added benefit of slowing cost inflation this time around, with the baker having promised to execute promotions during the first quarter to offer its customers “exceptional value”. #LSE #GRG More at #Proactive #ProactiveInvestors http://ow.ly/R1Hb1057GWb

🛒 This month, Morrisons became the latest #retailer to launch a price match scheme with Aldi UK and Lidl GB in the UK, after Asda made the move in January. More generally, we saw promotions accelerate this month after a post-Christmas slowdown. Consumers’ spending on offers increased by 4% in February, worth £586 million more than the same month in 2023. 📈 Sainsbury's and Iceland’s efforts paid off in particular, and they were the only retailers to attract more shoppers through their doors. The battle between supermarkets’ own-label lines and brands also remains fierce. Own-label nipped ahead this month, growing sales by 5.5% versus branded products at 5.3%. Want to know more? Grocery sales are the most important bellwether for an improving economy through 2024. Lidl & Aldi were the fastest growing grocers year on year, but Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose accounted for a combined market share of 70% over the last Quarter of 2023. More importantly for UK PLC supermarket inflation fell at its fastest monthly rate on record, which is a sure fire indication that overall inflation is reducing drastically and interest rates should follow… #grocery #groceryretail #inflation #interestrates #retailrealestate #retail #ynwa https://lnkd.in/dUW7Ehfk

🛒The past nine months has been quite a step change for Lidl GB, having been consecutively named the fastest growing bricks-and-mortar #supermarket and hitting a record market share of 8.1%. But why is the #discounter performing so well right now, can its growth continue, and can it ever overtake its closest competitors Morrisons and Aldi UK? 👉With comment from Thomas Steel, Catherine S. and Matthew Nobbs. Clubcard And Nectar Prices Fail To Beat The Discounters Aldi and Lidl remained the UK’s cheapest grocery retailers in September, even when loyalty promotions at the traditional supermarkets are taken into account. In its monthly analysis, consumer watchdog Which? compared how much the UK’s leading chains charged for a selection of 59 everyday products, including branded and own-label items. It found the total cost was £102.68 at Aldi – around 10% less than at Tesco and Sainsbury’s, even when Clubcard and Nectar offers were included. An equivalent shop at Lidl cost £1.18 more than at Aldi. Meanwhile, Asda was also cheaper than Tesco or Sainsbury’s, despite not offering member-only discounts. The findings come just days after Aldi capitalised on the revelation that dozens of Tesco products price-matched to the discounter were not like-for-like. Aldi UK Managing Director of buying Julie Ashfield commented: “Shoppers are already thinking ahead to Christmas and how they can afford a great festive season without breaking the bank. It’s reassuring that switching to Aldi will help shoppers save for the big day. “We have always said that other supermarkets can try to match us on quality or price, but never both. The Which? results confirm the only place shoppers can get Aldi prices and high quality products is at Aldi.” NamNews Implications: * All retailers will appreciate that a 10% discount vs Tesco… * …and a 20% discount vs Waitrose… * …have to make a difference to cautious/cash-strapped and even savvy consumer-shoppers. * Raising the question of how far prices have to drop… * …in order to neutralise discounter-pull. * (and who will have the courage to try?) #Discounters #PriceMatch

Asda has followed rival major supermarkets Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) and J Sainsbury's PLC (LSE:SBRY) in announcing cuts to bring many product prices in line with those seen at Aldi UK and Lidl GB. Some 287 products will be cut in price by an average of 17%, #Asda announced on Friday, “to match whichever discounter has the lowest price on these products”. Both #Tesco and #Sainsburys already offer so-called 'Aldi price match’ deals, with Kantar earlier this week explaining that the German discounters had enjoyed the strongest sales growth among UK supermarkets in the run-up to Christmas. Alongside this, sales of cheaper own-branded products rocketed compared to labelled-goods, continuing a trend of shoppers searching for better deals as budgets remain squeezed. Marks and Spencer (M&S) has seen its sales grow faster than Aldi UK, marking it as the UK's second-fastest-growing supermarket, behind only Lidl GB. According to data from NIQ, M&S's food sales increased by 11.6% in the 12 weeks leading up to January, YOY. This growth has allowed M&S to pass Co-op in market size, now with 3.8% of the grocery market share. Reflects well on M&S CEO Stuart Machin’s strategy to attract more customers by lowering prices on household basics, leading to more shoppers doing their full grocery shop at M&S. M&S has historically been known for its food-to-go, the classic top-up and special occasion shop, ready meals, Colin The Caterpillar cakes (#AcceptNoCopies) and Percy Pigs but has expanded its offerings in fresh food and staples. Aldi, known for its cost-effective pricing strategy due to selling fewer product ranges in bulk, has become Britain’s fourth largest supermarket, overtaking struggling Morrisons in 2022 now with new CEO in place (#GoRami). It plans to continue its expansion in the UK, aiming to open an additional 500 stores to its current count of 1,000 outlets. Aldi intends to invest £1.4 billion in the UK over the next two years. Despite the discounters experiencing significant sales growth due to cost-of-living pressures, growth rates have normalized to around 10% in the last 12 weeks as inflation slows down. And as we can see, Asda’s troubles of many different flavours continue. Ocado Retail Ltd, the online grocer partly owned by M&S, also saw an 11.3% increase in sales during the same period, boosted by recent wet weather and storms. Impressive performance. And nice to see a British retail icon doing well. #IBMRetail #IBMConsumer #FMCG #ConsumerGoods #Retail #RethinkRetail #RethinkRetailTopExpert IBM RETHINK Retail
