"Despite the challenges, European companies are showing exceptional resilience, adaptability to the current situation and strong commitment to supporting its employees and supply chain partners," said Karina Ufert, CEO of EuroCham Myanmar. The 11th Business Confidence Survey conducted by EuroCham Myanmar in June 2023 found that businesses are encountering major challenges with banking, regulations, electricity, logistics, safety and security, which are impacting their operations and the market. Nearly half of the businesses surveyed reported increasing product prices to balance the rising costs, and 44% have seen a decline in profits in recent months. In spite of these difficulties, the majority of EuroCham members report their intention to remain in Myanmar. Southeast Asia at the crossroads: Three paths to prosperity The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) encompasses Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam—countries with a multitude of ethnicities and languages as well as wide economic disparities. But these nations are tied together by multiple threads of history and culture, and today they are increasingly linked by business networks, trade relationships, migration, and shared resources. Almost five decades after the organization’s founding, ASEAN is pursuing more ambitious goals for integration.

Ahead of Chief Executive John Lee’s upcoming mission to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, Chamber Chairman Agnes Chan, BBS said the outreach initiative showed Hong Kong’s sincerity in fostering closer ties with ASEAN countries. Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Chan said she was honoured to be part of the high-level HKSAR delegation visiting the three nations from 28 July to 2 August. With the global economy's centre of gravity shifting eastward, ASEAN is emerging as a dynamic force. Amid current geopolitical tensions, Hong Kong businesses must seize opportunities to diversify their markets, said Chan. ASEAN countries, in particular, are seen as attractive destinations for foreign direct investments due to the favourable incentives they offer. In a recent member survey by the Chamber’s Asia, Africa and Middle East Committee, 65% of the respondents ranked ASEAN as their focus in the coming 12 months.
