[Member’s News – Towngas Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium] Facing the challenge of #ClimateChange, governments around the globe are committed to reducing #CarbonEmissions and accelerating the #EnergyTransition. Following the Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong released in June, Towngas sees great development potential and huge business opportunities for #Hydrogen, which is widely regarded as a low-carbon energy source. The development and application of other green energies, such as #GreenMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) for maritime and air transportation, have also become hot topics. On the other hand, with the release of the Recommendations on Nature-related Financial Disclosure Information issued by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the issue of biodiversity has also attracted a lot of attention from corporations. To respond to National Ecology Day on 15 August, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited will host a Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium, to bring together experts from the Government, business sectors, academia and conservation field for an exchange of ideas across applications of new energies and biodiversity conservation. Join Towngas on the path to green transformation! The event will be held in a hybrid format and is free for admission. January 12th, 2024 Climate action | Supporting mitigation and adaptation to climate change RURALITIES empowers rural communities to build capacities for innovation effectively, whilst fostering sustainable, balanced, and inclusive development of targeted Simplified Rural Socio-Ecological Systems (SIMSES). The project is geared towards delivering climate-smart, ecosystem-enhancing, and knowledge-based rural expertise and training centers, with a primary focus on mitigating and adapting to climate change in the rural land-use sector. The initiative encompasses a comprehensive set of strategies, including the promotion of sustainable land management practices like agroforestry and crop rotation to enhance carbon sequestration. It also emphasises the integration of decentralised renewable energy solutions, such as solar, wind, and biomass, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in rural areas. Knowledge transfer and capacity building form integral components, with the establishment of rural expertise and training centers, workshops, webinars, and demonstration farms to educate farmers on climate-smart practices. Community-based adaptation programmes, early warning systems, and eco-tourism initiatives are promoted to enhance community resilience, sustainable land use, and alternative livelihoods. RURALITIES has received funding from the European Union’s HORIZON EUROPE research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No 101060876. Today is International Day for #BiologicalDiversity! At #ENGIE, we're proud to be part of the solution for biodiversity and #climatechange. Signing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in December 2022 marked a significant milestone in our journey. ENGIE systematically analyzes its industrial activities across the entire value chain to identify critical areas affecting #biodiversity. We collaborate closely with suppliers to develop and implement effective mitigation action plans. To support these efforts, we have incorporated biodiversity criteria into the Life Cycle Analyses (LCAs) of our projects, allowing us to more accurately pinpoint the stages that impact #ecosystems. Across the Middle East we continue our biodiversity actions through: ✅ Our Mangrove rehabilitation program in partnership with Distant Imagery and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) to date we have planted more than 1million seeds ensuring a successful growth of 500,000 saplings. ✅ Over in North Africa, The Fondation GoodPlanet and the ENGIE Foundation are enhancing biodiversity in Morocco by developing 10 sustainable beekeeping cooperatives in the Mesguina forest. ✅ Our research with AQUASEARCH SARL, and SNI exploring the fascinating world of dolphins in Dakhla Bay, Morocco. This research helped us gain a deeper understanding of these incredible marine animals, identifying individual behaviors and pinpointing the key threats they face in their natural habitat. ✅ In all our wind projects, we implement shut down-on-demand procedures to protect migratory species and prevent any negative impact on their populations. Our efforts continue as we accelerate renewable energy development and in May 2022, we released our Sustainable Energy Transition Label (SET label) to assure transparent development of #renewableenergy projects with focus on local community involvement and #environmental responsibility. Let's work together to build a future where nature thrives alongside our progress, Be #PartOfThePlan. Innovation that can promote solar energy at a local level. Thanks to Thuli Makota Korhonen for being part of this huge project that can take clean green energy that is sustainable and modern. Improving lives for many even in the remote areas of Zambia. Why Is The Solar Stove Important ? A solar stove is important for several reasons. Firstly, it harnesses renewable clean energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing carbon emissions. Secondly, it’s ideal for areas with limited access to electricity or clean cooking fuels, improving health and reducing deforestation. Thirdly, with the high cost of electricity tariffs and high gasoline pump, it makes it a reasonable investment in energy efficiency. With continued load shedding begin experienced in many parts of South Africa has seen a spike in the demand for diesel as its used in a generator to provide electricity for just a few hours. Therefore as the countries drive towards a transition to renewable energy sources and innovation, the solar stove should become an alternative to charcoal. By enhancing renewable energy technologies we creating jobs and tackling climate changes that is already exacerbating lives of the vulnerable people in our communities. Additionally, it’s cost-effective and sustainable in the long run, promoting self-reliance and resilience in communities. By Ruby N. Belated but inspiring World Day of Creativity and Innovation! Thanks to this special day, it is appropriate to return to the origins of the Afstor solar cooker. Serial innovator Ari Piispanen had an insight that he could use his creativity to solve the most pressing sustainability crisis - climate change. When presenting Ari’s climate innovation Soletair Power to the distinguished advisory service company Pöyry [now known as Afry], their research came up. According to the study, #reforestationofAfrica would be an effective way to #curbclimatechange, and it could be achieved by stopping the unnecessary burning of wood. Ari and Dr Jero Ahola took on the challenge. Their solar cooker prototype, developed in Lappeenranta, received a warm welcome in the rural off-grid area of Zambia! Ari's groundbreaking idea was to establish a #thrivingecosystem centered around the solar cooker. The ecosystem facilitates the transition away from burning firewood in off-grid rural areas by arranging funding from companies and individuals committed to #offsettingemissions to achieve their #carbonneutrality goals. Selecting an Afstor solar cooker as the means of compensation addresses numerous complex sustainability challenges beyond emissions, including severe health problems and obstacles to education. #innovation #inaction solving #complex #sustainabilitychallenges [In Finnish in the comments]
