Much has been written about the future of primary care. I believe in the power of primary care to be a facilitator of health for individuals and communities. I recently had a great discussion with #BrittanyTrang from STAT where I shared many thoughts about the current and future state of primary care. Here are 5 key points: 1) We need to invest in the promulgation of health, and that starts with primary care and family medicine. 2) I’ve been around this and at this a long time and family medicine and primary care’s obituary has been written many times in my 25-plus years of doing this work,” he said with a laugh. 3) there’s just a dramatic underinvestment in this country in primary care, and there’s an overinvestment in end-stage disease, heroic measures. And I think that has built over time. We’ll spend tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for treatment of a disease state that could have been otherwise prevented or managed in a different way through primary care for probably pennies on the dollar compared to those high-cost interventions. 4) Primary care today is somewhere between 4 and 6% of all health care spending. However, it faces the enormous pressure of being 50+ percent of all visits. If you think about primary care like another utility or public good, it would be similar to a state or community not investing in water treatment and then wondering why everybody was getting sick from the poor water quality.   5) We have to reorient the future physician workforce around the concept that primary care is really about people and not organ systems and disease and create an emotional attachment to the concept of taking care of people across the life spectrum and matching what I think are medical students’ strong desires to be people-focused and community-focused with disciplines of medicine that really help them have the highest impact on people being healthy and living healthier and better lives at the individual population based level.   Keeping primary care docs in field isn't impossible, says AAFP CEO (statnews.com)
