This quote from young people during sessions at The James Brindley Foundation reflects the harsh reality - Nicola Neville https://lnkd.in/eD8qzTmS Over 50,000 knife-related incidents were reported in the past year, marking a 4% increase from 2022. But how many more go unreported, leaving us unaware of the accurate scale of this crisis? In cities like #Birmingham, communities are uniting, demanding stronger laws and stricter enforcement against zombie knives. Grieving Parents Speak Out: Mothers who have lost their children to knife crime, like Alison Cope and Charlotte Marshall, are calling for even more stringent regulations. Their message is clear: “We need action before another life is lost.” Many young people are carrying knives out of fear, not malice. Communities and grieving families call for change in enforcement, education, and prevention. As zombie knives are banned, we must focus on the root causes and support community initiatives to make streets safer. It’s time to come together—communities, lawmakers, educators, and businesses—to protect the lives of young people and support initiatives that tackle the root causes of violence. From 24 September, it will be illegal to own zombie-style knives and machetes in the UK. 🔵 An epidemic of #guncrime and #gangcrime continues in Sweden - 148 shootings reported so far this year - 20 of them fatal. 🔵 This new article from POLITICO explains how this issue is a politcial problem for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson: https://lnkd.in/d_TBVB4x 🔵 The impact was felt in the UK again this month after two young men from North London were reported missing in Sweden and two bodies were found in Malmo having been shot and their car burned out. https://lnkd.in/dx92XZZr 🔵 Reuters reported on the issue recently, highlighting how boys from Sweden's youth homes have been drawn into the violence. A police officer is quoted as describing the youth homes as '𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙄𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙨'. The article describes classic Child Criminal Exploitation. Any child can be the victim of #exploitation but being in care is a significant risk factor https://lnkd.in/dg8u-d-R 🔵 The minimum age for criminal responsibility in Sweden is 15 (as opposed to 10 in most of the UK) and those under 18 are very rarely sent to prison. As a result, there is an incentive for gangs to recruit children who are immune from prosecution to conduct shootings and other crimes. 🔵 In the UK, section 45 of the Modern Slavery Act provides a defence for victims of exploitation who commit offences on behalf of their abusers. However His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) have found evidence that the defence can perversely increase the risk of exploitation as offenders tell their recruits that they are immune from prosecution. It seems that children in Sweden may be falling into a similar unintended consequence. The Swedish government are reported to be considering reducing the age of criminal responsibility. 🔵 One tactic being used in Sweden to tackle the violence is the rollout of "security zones" where police can #stopandsearch without suspicion. A similar tactic is used in the UK: Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act gives police the right to search people without reasonable grounds. This can only happen in a defined area for a limited time when a senior officer believes there is a possibility of serious violence, or weapons are involved. #firearms #murder #police

ALONG THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL… Arizona’s open border has invited chaos to dinner, and we are the hosts. In the past two years, we have seen an influx of foreign gangs, increased criminal activity and violent crime in every neighborhood along with an infinite supply of fentanyl. Unlike my opponent, I chose to knock on those doors, and found them open and eager to support when you listen and engage with respect and integrity. Who we heard from: A broad spectrum of individuals in vocal unison insistent about replacing weak politicians with strong leaders and demanding proactive solutions to prevent further damage by replacing current failures. Here are those failures: Repeat violent offenders getting 3rd and 4th chances. Inattention to charging violent crimes. The current leaders are not helping today’s residents of Maricopa County. Applying a two-tier system and leaning further left toward a sanctuary state. Repurposing old solutions that are outdated and ineffective. Decades focused on retail theft is only a portion of the “theft” pie which includes property, homes, lives, and liberties. Inability to address and resolve escalating issues of drug abuse, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and unaccounted minors. The Maricopa County Attorney will continue her compliant nature by appeasing past and current liberal establishment agendas, while furthering her complacency by giving liberal staff the power to affect policy. Yet, most egregious is her complicit neglect of victims, waiting years for solutions, and soliciting investigators to fill in the blanks left by her office. Replace a weak county attorney. I will be your last line of defense to make Maricopa Strong.

Put Victims First VA. We are actively monitoring the General Assembly budget amendments 394 #2h (Chief Patron Delegate Karrie Delaney) and 394 #1s (Chief Patron Senator barbara favola) as we eagerly await the news that impacts the lives of so many Virginians. Local agencies providing life-saving services for victims of crime are facing a financial crisis like we’ve never seen. In the past 5 years alone, Virginia’s funding from the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) has been cut by a whopping 47.5% and discretionary TANF funding is projected to disappear by FY25. As a result of these ongoing and devastating cuts, the community safety-net for victims is rapidly eroding. But we can turn this around. It's not too late to contact your Delegate and Senator and voice your opinion that if policy leaders don’t act now, victims of human trafficking, child sexual assault, domestic violence, and other violent crimes will suffer. ALL VICTIMS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO THE SAFETY, SUPPORT, AND HEALING THAT THEY SO DESPERATELY DESERVE. Take an easy action! Let your reps know that we need their support. Find your Representatives in VA at https://lnkd.in/egNeMzuZ WHAT DOES A VICTIMS’ SERVICES CRISIS LOOK LIKE? * A domestic violence victim seeking safety is unable to find emergency shelter because there are no available beds. * A trafficked child who needs a forensic exam has to travel two counties over for the nearest services. * An emergency hotline that was previously available 24/7 now only operates weekdays from 9am-5pm. * A sexual assault victim who needs trauma counseling is put on a 3-month waiting list for the services the need. * A prosecutor who needs testimony for their case but no Victim-Witness Advocate is available to help. This is happening already in Virginia and it will only get worse if we don’t act now. VICTIMS DESERVE BETTER What would a sustainable, robust, and effective response for victims look like? **** A 24/7/365 Hotline that responds to calls, texts, chats helping victims safety plan, access emergency shelter, find medical and legal help, provide referrals to community-based resources,and more. **** A Victim Witness advocate in every prosecutor’s office who can work with victims to collect impact statements, prepare for testimony and/or court, support legal and systems-based remedies, and refer to life-saving resources in the community. **** A Fully staffed Sexual and Domestic Violence Agency where victims can receive confidential and safe access to services, including emergency shelter and transitional housing, hospital and court accompaniment, trauma counseling, child and family advocacy, violence prevention programming, etc. **** Fully staffed Child Advocacy Center where childabuse and trafficking victims can receive trauma-informed and family-focused services includingforensic exams, criminal and legal systemsnavigation, medical advocacy, and ongoingcounseling for children and families.

💪 Communities Standing Together Against Small Crimes In recent times, we've seen powerful examples of how communities can work together to fight small crimes and ensure safety for all. A notable instance in London saw bystanders bravely intervene to catch watch thieves and detain them until the police arrived. This collective action is a testament to the strength and solidarity within communities. 🔔 Points to Remember: 1️⃣ Ensure that any intervention is non-lethal. The goal is to prevent harm, not to escalate the situation. 2️⃣ Do not use weapons; they can turn a small crime into a dangerous confrontation. Stick to non-violent means of intervention. 3️⃣ Your safety is paramount. Knife crime laws are undergoing revisions, as the effectiveness of the law since 2016 is questionable, especially regarding the debate on whether suspects should be imprisoned for a first offense. Additionally, the impact of carrying knives could potentially be mitigated by stricter sentencing, and there is a growing need for more youth workers to support young individuals. Exploring changes in laws concerning other offensive weapons is also worth considering. The influence of social media on youth with regard to knife crime is an important aspect that requires examination. From April 2022 to March 2023, the overall incidents with a knife or sharp object (excluding Greater Manchester and Devon & Cornwall) rose by 6%, going from 44,500 in 2021/22 to 47,300 in 2022/23.
