In my case, the answer to the question “ How can architects define the value they bring, and be recognised for it, in a capitalist society?” was to become a developer, to set up a “design and build” company. Hopefully by the end of this year I can have the confirmation that I made it work! Sustenability, community based architecture, ensuring healthy environments, are the cornerstone principles of my approach. When the frustration of waiting for the “ideal client” got to the point of beeing unbearable I realised that ideal client is me! 😃 And in the true spirit of antrepreneurship I started to work on my projects and raise funding by finding investors who resonate with my vision. The present economic context is not quite ideal but I trust that, after a three years of hard work, by the end of the year, we shall have the proof that it can be done: the real value that architects bring into society is raising the quality of life, for people, for communities!
There was certainly no shortage of big issues to grapple with at our recent RIBA Journal Rising Stars roundtable, supported by Origin.
How can architects define the value they bring, and be recognised for it, in a capitalist society? How are they tackling the challenges of designing sustainably and inclusively? And how can architects learn from other sectors?
