Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful form of gender-based violence that involves the partial or total removal of female genitalia. It is rooted in gender inequality and causes severe physical and emotional harm, including pain, complications in childbirth, and lasting trauma. FGM violates human rights and perpetuates the oppression of women and girls, making it a key issue in the global fight against gender-based violence.

I agree with you. The crisis is insanely alarming. Preventing #GBV, although a collective and deliberate effort, must be tackled strategically, too. That's why I admire the work organisations like Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative are doing: Mobilising Traditional leaders for the prevention of #GBV and co-creating prevention resources that will give birth to stronger and imperatively viable resources. It completed day two of the #Kwara North edition of the workshop yesterday and it was where tough but pertinent conversation ensued. The workshop in Kwara North made the third senatorial district we have visited; we had similar workshops in Kwara Central and Kwara South earlier last month. What all of these Workshops ensued is that it has mobilised traditional leaders who have appended their signatures to the creation of policy documents and resources to strengthen the legal framework and cultural beliefs for the prevention of #GBV. Olufunke Omoyemi-Baruwa, Organisations like Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative should be supported, spotlighted and pushed forward for more impact-driven community work.

"Femicide is a complex and multifactorial issue" Important study by the Office of the State Pathologist into the rise of femicides in Ireland, showing that the vast majority of perpetrators knew their victim and that the femicide happened in a context of previous domestic abuse and violence. Studies like this give crucial insight into developing effective measures to hopefully prevent #femicide and violence against women. https://lght.ly/ll824el

DAY 2 HARMFUL CULTURAL PRACTICES The issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a critical concern that demands attention. Harmful Cultural Practices have perpetuated this form of violence, violating the fundamental human rights of women and girls. GBV targets individuals based on their gender, with alarming statistics revealing the extent of the problem: - 1 in 3 women globally experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. - Approximately 200 million girls and women have undergone female genital mutilation. - Shockingly, about 137 women lose their lives daily due to violence inflicted by partners or family members. These numbers emphasize the urgent need for collective action to combat GBV. It is crucial to challenge and dismantle harmful cultural norms that enable such atrocities, ensuring the safety, autonomy, and dignity of every girl/womn out there #FAMAgainstGBV #EndGBV I Rahimat Dauda, I stand against Gender-Based Violence. Let's unite to break the silence and work towards a world free from GBV. #HumanRightsAwareness. Female And More

We welcome the Australian Government’s $4.7 billion commitment to addressing gender-based violence – a crucial step toward ensuring women and girls are #SafeEverywhereAlways. Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, causing lasting physical and psychological harm while reinforcing gender inequality. The solution lies in robust responses, including investment in prevention and frontline services. But real change requires action from us all. From individuals in their communities to institutions such as the justice system, healthcare, education, and government – everyone has a part to play in creating safer spaces for women, everywhere and always. Violence costs us all, and together, we can put an end to it.

It is disheartening that, even in this century, a significant number of women and girls continue to face gender-based violence (GBV). Although men can also be victims, the vast majority of those affected are women, with the perpetrators typically being men. Gender-based violence refers to acts of violence directed at individuals based on their gender, primarily impacting women and girls. This violence encompasses various forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic harm. Key factors contributing to GBV include cultural norms that uphold gender inequality, poverty that fosters stress and vulnerability, and inadequate legal frameworks that fail to protect victims. The repercussions of GBV are extensive, resulting in physical injuries, psychological trauma, and social isolation for survivors. Furthermore, it has broader societal implications, such as economic loss and the continued perpetuation of gender-based discrimination.
