The Henry Tudor Inn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, is one of the oldest pubs in England. 🍺 The building is said to have hosted Henry Tudor (the future Henry VII) during the Bosworth campaign against Richard III in 1485. Built for the local MP, Hugh Wygan, in the 15th century, tree-ring dating shows that the oldest part is the rear wing, dated to 1426, with the front dated from 1430 to 1431. The original building included shops, a brewhouse, taproom and accommodation which attracted guests entering the town from the east over the English Bridge. A 12-month project to rescue the 15th-century Upminster Tithe Barn has begun! 🙌 The tithe barn was built for Waltham Abbey at a time when Upminster in London was open countryside. Now, in the London suburbs, the fascinating barn remains relatively unchanged and is one of the oldest thatched buildings in London. Restoration begins thanks to a partnership between London Borough of Havering National Highways and Historic England. We added the tithe barn, which is protected as a scheduled monument - the highest level of heritage protection - to the #HeritageAtRisk Register in 2023. Together, the partners have developed a conservation project that will secure the building’s future. Four master thatchers and two apprentices are hard at work re-thatching the barn with water reed. Around 11,000 bundles will be used, weighing in at around 30 tonnes. Lexden Contracts Ltd, Simply Thatch Limited

Daunt Books’ flagship store is housed in a former Edwardian bookshop in Marylebone, London. 📖 Built in 1910, it is believed to be one of the oldest custom-built bookshops in the country. James Daunt bought the building in 1990, and Daunt Books was founded. The company, which specialises in travel, now has several branches across London.

This roadside inn dates to around the 18th century or possibly earlier. The Harrow Inn in Steep, East Hampshire, is well-located at the meeting of 6 roads, including 2 known routes for cattle drovers headed for Alton or the Farnham Corn Market, which was one of the largest in the south of England in the mid-18th century. Phases of the building’s history can be explored through its timber frame, smokehood, inglenook and beams. It retains many historical features, including informal bar hatches rather than bar fronts. Eyes down for bingo! 'It was like the heart of Prescot.' 🎱 Prescot Picture Palace opened in 1912 and is one of England's earliest surviving cine-variety houses. Since closing in 1957, the building has been a carpet shop, a church, and a bingo hall during the 1980s. The building was acquired by Knowsley Council in 2021 and its restoration is the largest project in our Prescot High Street Heritage Action Zone. What will it be used for next? #HistoricHighStreets
