Bringing together the work of the sport sector, Sport Horizon provides a framework to focus our efforts and resources to drive improvement and better outcomes for sport over the next decade. The priorities will align with Australia’s National Sport Participation Strategy – Play Well, and Australia’s 2032+ High Performance Sport Strategy – Win Well.

This week, Ellen Hughes joined our friends at GAC UK at the European Sponsorship Association (ESA)’s 'Time for Action with Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge’ event. Moderated by François Singer from 17 Sport, the panel featured: Fiona Morgan, Chief Purpose Office at SailGP, Fabien Paget, Co-Founder & CEO at 17 Sport, Kevin Tayebaly, Co-Founder at ChangeNOW and Stuart Wareman, Global SVP Experiences, Events & Sponsorship at Accor. Ellen’s Takeaways: "The panel discussed a range of thought-provoking ideas on sustainability in sports, including Fiona's emphasis on collaboration: while competition is important in sports, sustainability in the sports industry should be a collective effort, not a competitive one. Collaborating across the industry to share sustainability successes, learnings and challenges will help to drive forward sustainability in the industry. "The importance of the relationship between sponsorship, sports and sustainability was another key topic of discussion. What’s the value of sport? New Zealand’s elite rowers were in action at Karāpiro this weekend, as part of their trials for #ParisOlympics2024. Not many sports can line up the best in the world, together with novice, school, club and emerging athletes in the same competition. What an inspirational opportunity for aspiring rowers to see the best compete for a New Zealand seat, while they too put their best performance on the water. Over the weekend there was the full spectrum of highs and lows at the regatta - moments of triumph and heartbreak. From water like glass to wind and rain. The athletes rowed through it all. And their supporters didn’t stop cheering. This is sport, right?! What a privilege for these events to be in our own backyard. Some reflections: * Coaches and sports leaders are essential to set up a team to perform with success * Preparation is critical * Communication is a cornerstone to success including great team culture * Hard work matters * Adversity happens, even for the best. When it does, there’s a need to manage emotions, adapt and make practical choices about how to respond * Mistakes are an opportunity to learn, if you’re prepared to take feedback on board * Sport provides an opportunity to build confidence individually and as a collective * There is true value from a sense of belonging that can come with involvement in sport and being part of a team. If you or young people can get involved, do * Acknowledgement and a little praise can go a long way for someone learning or trying something new * Enjoy the experience and celebrate the moments with your people * Volunteers are amazing * There is a collective responsibility to be fair and play by the rules And isn’t the connection that comes from involvement in sport fantastic. This collaboration not only strengthens brand recognition but also aligns with CSR and ESG objectives. Each year, 55 young athletes and their coaches receive a $10,000 grant through the Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE) program. These funds are typically used for training, equipment, coach education, and travel expenses for competitions. Having written a book about the winning strategies of elite sports, and having enjoyed the many achievements at the Olympics, this question caught my eye. Where does performance go from here? It’s an excellent article. Yes, there will be more developments in elite performance, more records broken. But this article is also worth a read to learn how elite athletes, and Team GB, have come so far. Dr Thomas Brownlee, associate professor in applied sport sciences at the University of Birmingham, shares his insight into why we’ve seen these improvements. “It’s about how people trained, how people recovered, nutrition, strategies, training specifics, talent identification... 20 years ago, nutrition wasn't really considered at all.
