Continuing the #celebration of our 35-year #anniversary, we are taking a look back at the projects that led us to the work we do today. In the 1990s, Michael Willis and Jeff McGraw landed two projects in #California that laid the foundation for how MWA provides #ArchitecturalSolutions for public water, wastewater, and solid waste #infrastructure facilities and campuses: El Sobrante and Upper San Leandro. Our project expertise has grown to include various project types, but the commonality is that we prioritize the needs of the personnel who operate and maintain our #PublicInfrastructure facilities. Through design, we create #modern, durable, and comfortable work environments and opportunities for #PublicEngagement and water #education for the communities served by public agencies. My hometown of West Chester, Pennsylvania, is a great success story for integrating the urban forest into the built infrastructure. Despite this, we face many challenges that are common to our region at large. The need to further incorporate green infrastructure systems into our towns and cities is now more prevalent than ever as we face new challenges from climate change. Chief among these problems is the lack of infrastructure to support large overstory trees. Soil volume is limited in our cities, and the quality of soil varies considerably. Designing for future urban forests will require adequate soil volume to improve the landscape below ground and above ground.

Following the adoption of Greater Manchester's Places for Everyone spatial strategy earlier this year, Shoosmiths brought together real estate experts for a roundtable discussion on the plan and approaches to new development, redevelopment, renewable energy provision, and decarbonisation. While the focus is on unlocking new regeneration and development opportunities, the plan also emphasises the ‘aim to maximise its economic, social, and environmental benefits simultaneously, minimise adverse impacts, utilise sustainable construction techniques, and actively seek opportunities to secure net gains across all objectives.’ This presents a challenge for developers, building owners, occupiers, and investors that are already navigating evolving legislation and broader environmental risks. Therefore, a balance must be struck between maintaining project viability and futureproofing Greater Manchester’s building stock – both new and existing developments. The retrofit of heritage and historic buildings involves preserving history and embracing sustainability. A large number of buildings in the UK are heritage structures and are often less energy-efficient due to their older construction. The goal is to maintain these buildings' cultural identity and transition them to be more sustainable and energy-efficient. Urban Union has been granted planning consent to transform the site of the former Glasgow Coliseum Theatre into 64 new homes. Part of the Laurieston Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA), the development is a joint venture between New Gorbals Housing Association (NGHA) and Urban Union, which will provide 64 social homes for rent and a generous community space on the derelict site of the former theatre on Eglinton Street, near the O2 Academy. Reiach and Hall Architects are designing the development. Neil McKay, Managing Director, Urban Union, says: "This is great news that together with New Gorbals Housing Association, we will continue to repurpose neglected spaces in the regeneration of the Laurieston area. Aligning with our own and Glasgow’s net zero targets, properties will feature a ground source heat pump system as opposed to gas boilers, as well as triple-glazing where required to support the decarbonisation of the buildings.
