Excellent meeting last week in Basel, on innovation and digital health during which I have been honored to discuss in a roundtable how pharma and startups can collaborate to support innovation, and how to mitigate the difficulties that startups may encounter when attempting to partner with large healthcare companies. #digitalhealth

When Fondation Sophia Antipolis met last week with Taiwan’s dynamic startup ecosystem it was part of a strategic road map to facilitate startups from Sophia Antipolis looking to enter Asian markets and use Taiwan as a strategic entry point, leveraging its local expertise and connections. And similarly facilitate Taiwanese startups to tap into European markets through Sophia Antipolis. Taiwan startups ecosystem is a dynamic and growing landscape, characterized by strong governmental support, a skilled workforce, and strategic industry strengths. As the ecosystem continues to mature, Taiwan is well-positioned to become a leading hub for innovation and entrepreneurship Both regions can benefit from collaborative R&D projects, leveraging each other’s strengths in ICT, biotechnology, and environmental technologies. Partnerships between universities and research institutions can drive innovation. Establishing exchange programs where startups from Taiwan can spend time in Sophia Antipolis and vice versa can foster knowledge sharing, cultural exchange, and business development opportunities. 🎉 What an exciting year it's been for our team in Europe! 🙌 🔬Earlier this summer we were thrilled to welcome 120 new colleagues from Lunaphore 🎈 🏥For those who have not heard of them, Lunaphore are a Swiss medtech company, which pioneers spatial biology techniques for tissue diagnostics. Their automated, high precision, microfluidic chip technology that can extract spatial proteomic and transcriptomic data from tumors is truly game-changing. 👨🔬 Their 9 year journey from being a EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) spin-out, attracting venture funding, commercial growth and technology launch, to being part of the Bio-Techne family is truly inspirational. They span out successfully in 2014 with co-founder Ata Tuna Ciftlik's PhD thesis being the starting point of the design of the original device that was then developed by Lunaphore. It's easy to forget the role of industry start-up programs. This September, the 13th TOP 100 Swiss Startup Awards took place at the Startup Space in Schlieren, demonstrating the technological prowess of the Swiss startup scene. With support of over 1000 Swiss start up ideas from across Swiss universities since 2007, Venturelab offers startups up to CHF 150,000 in start capital, and an opportunity for an additional CHF 850,000 in equity funding from the #Kickfund Lunaphore is a #VentureKick winner, a TOP 100 Startup and Scale-Up, as well as a Venture Leader alum, and had closed a Series D funding round earlier this year. Ata Tuna Ciftlik, Diego Gabriel Dupouy, and Déborah Heintze, the co-founders of #Lunaphore enlightened the audience about the company's mission: to establish tumour analysis workflows that bolster immuno-oncology research. They also discussed Lunaphore's recent acquisition, marking their entry into the #BioTechne family and solidifying their position as the leading player in the spatial biology market! 👏 Despite challenges in early stage biotech and medtech funding, excitement remains in the air around the start-up space in Europe with early stage seed and venture funds available for promising platforms and innovative technologies, through to eventual M&A deals. Our Technische Universität München produces by far the most startups in Germany. But we need to do more. To stay competitive, Germany must create far more innovation ecosystems such as the ones we have already in Munich, Berlin or Aachen.
