When wastewater data showed an uncharacteristic spike in influenza A, Verily scientists, in partnership with WastewaterSCAN, developed an H5 assay to help trace the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus infection. We’re currently testing for H5 at more than a hundred wastewater sites in over 40 states across the country. Wastewater Surveillance can help us once more! The science is ready, the tools are there, and yet our public health systems struggle to pick up this wonderful tool. All signs seem to indicate that Human-to-Human infections are the exception, but if we have learned one thing in the last four years, than that we should never underestimate a virus’ ability to mutuate. Question is: Can human society “adapt and mutate faster”? #GLOWACON and your work in the US gives me hope!

Waste water do not lie. Wastewater information is a reliable measure of diseases and drugs use in communities. Waste water sampling detect early before they show up in clinical test samples. Standard clinical surveillance is slow and cost-prohibitive. Sample preparation with special nano beads that binds efficiently to viral RNA is faster and less expensive. One wastewater sample is enough for detecting, estimating and sequencing whole city viral RNA
