🚨 NEW PUBLICATION | Empowering citizens in Europe’s green transition: The role of digital solutions In this Policy Brief, EPC's Laura Rayner ,Berta López Domènech , Brooke Moore , and Eric Maurice looked at how deeper participation helps to mitigate costs while promoting a more inclusive approach to the green transition. As Europe undergoes the green transition, engaging citizens as both beneficiaries and active agents in combating climate change is vital. Digital solutions support top-down and bottom-up methods of citizen involvement, ranging from citizen climate assemblies to online activism. These digital solutions can overcome obstacles like resource limitations, dwindling public trust, and a significant skills shortage in the green and digital arenas. With Ursula von der Leyen securing a second term as commissioner; her priorities for the next five years emphasises the need to boost innovation. Innovation which would include better climate action and green. Commitment to the Green deal is also a priority to von der Leyen. In her political guidelines, von der Leyen has committed to ' scale-up and prioritise investment in clean energy infrastructure and technologies' - A clean industrial deal that included digitalising energy systems and deployment of hydrogen network would be of essence. A stronger vision on climate action and energy will empower citizens to take control of their future. Yesterday, the European Commission unveiled its 2040 climate target communication, recommending a 90% net greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.   Here's a snapshot of the key actions proposed: 🏡 Sector collaboration: importance of reducing energy consumption, especially in buildings and transportation 🔄 Lifestyle shift: embracing energy-conscious habits for cost-effective transitions 🤝 Fairness & inclusivity: a fair climate transition, prioritizing vulnerable communities and businesses through initiatives like the Social Climate Fund and Just Transition Fund. 🌐 Open dialogue: inclusive talks with farmers, businesses, and citizens are key. Collaboration sparks innovative solutions for a sustainable future.   The target will now be discussed with the European Parliament and the Member States. The next Commission will eventually put forward legislative proposals on that basis.

Kurt Vandenberge, Director General at DG Climate Action highlights the achievements in the framework of the European Green Deal. The European Commission has followed a whole-of-economy-approach to decouple resource use and economic growth in a socially fair manner. "There is no way back. #NaturebasedSolutions are now widely recognised as playing a critical role in addressing major global challenges, in particular mitigating and adapting to climate change whilst delivering multiple benefits for people and nature. However, there remains confusion about what counts as a nature-based solution, how they compare to tech-based approaches, and how they should be designed, implemented, financed and governed ethically and sustainably. To address this, we offer the Nature-based Solutions to Global Challenges Foundation Course to improve awareness and understanding of the science, policy, practice, resourcing and governance of nature-based solutions. Registrations open for next term. The Nature-based Insights team run a fun and insightful day on business & biodiversity. The nature regulatory and reporting frameworks are shifting rapidly to  align with the global goals of the #ParisAgreement and the K-M #GlobalBiodiversityFramework. As a result, corporates and investors are increasingly required to report and act on their nature-related impacts, risks, and opportunities. But the scale and rate of change required is unprecedented, and the complexity of the science involved in responding to this rapidly evolving field highlights large skill + knowledge gaps within businesses. Over the past three years, we have been working with a range of industry leaders, NGOs, industry bodies to design a scientifically robust analytical framework that guides you through an in-depth multidimensional analysis of  nature-related impacts, climate risks, nature risks, and opportunities for protection and restoration of nature in specific landscapes.  See you there :)

I am a firm believer that the road to a greener economy will be paved with accurate, specific, and reliable data, used to measure our progress, communicate our impact, and refine our approach. PortsToronto has released an Annual Sustainability Report every year since 2015, and Billy Bishop Airport has done the same since 2017. In these reports, we report on the progress we've made on key metrics such as decarbonization, environmental preservation, community engagement, and economic growth. I regularly hear from members of the greater Toronto community about how illuminating these reports are for them We use these reports not just to measure our impact and to adapt our strategy in the year to come, but also to build bridges with our community and cultivate trust. This level of data-driven, evidence-based transparency has been incredibly important for us to build our credibility and communicate our progress in real, quantifiable terms. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #DataDriven
