I highly recommend the SOLAR course.
‘It started as a little bit of a pipe dream. We knew that if we could get 30 people to sign up for Science of Language and Reading short courses, we would break even. So we aimed for 50. In our first iteration, we got 900.’ - SOLAR Lab co-director Tanya A. Serry, PhD The sheer demand for the School of Education, La Trobe University’s SOLAR courses testifies to the current state of reading education in Australia. The courses draw on scientific understanding of how the human brain learns to read, equipping teachers with the tools they need to teach their students effectively in their early years. Until the Victorian Government’s recent commitment to embed evidence-based teaching into every classroom from prep to grade 2, each individual school decided on its own approach to teaching reading—with mixed results. ‘You buy a lottery ticket when your child starts school,’ says SOLAR lab Co-Director Pamela Snow. ‘Some will align strongly with the scientific evidence…others however, use a mixed bag of approaches.’ We’re proud the SOLAR lab is playing a key role in setting the standard for new teaching practices, working with select schools to make the switch to evidence-based teaching or ‘explicit instruction’ for reading education. This week I'm reading the study that's been making headlines in the climate misinformation world: https://lnkd.in/dDVWxYeM I don't have thoughts yet besides the urge to share something from page 1: the fossil fuel industry (and their PR companies) have been deliberately using university partnerships since the 1940s! I like the phrase "organized climate obstructionism by the fossil fuel industry" best. The study references internal memos, recommendations and manuals advising or planning to "co-opt", "partner" and cooperate with universities and "major scientists whose research in this field supports our position", among other things. In 2017, BP's PR firm suggested targeting Princeton as a partner to "authenticate" the company's "commitment to low carbon" while projections evidence their growing commitment, instead, to fossil fuel production. This study is the first literature review of it's kind; if you read it, let me know. It's a bombshell of things we've known for a long time. #climatechange #sustainability #renewables #justtransition

Just published a new article with colleague Andrew Chapman on "The Value of International Engagement in Energy Education." We discuss why direct international experiences, such as case studies, site visits, and personnel exchanges, are so valuable for education on energy technologies (and almost any other topic). Check it out at: https://lnkd.in/g4feuErk.
