Halfway through my summer internship at Walmart, I wanted to share some observations about corporate life here: 💰 People Currency: At the Home Office, Walmart truly values its people. 💎 Encouraging Excellence: Walmart pushes you to do your best every day, but they also understand the risks and provide support when things don't go as planned. 1️⃣ Customer First: Every business or project-related meeting I’ve attended always includes someone asking, "What does this do for the customer?" or mentioning how it improves the customer's life. The customer is always the priority. 😁 Amazing People: I've met over 700 interns and countless full-time associates, and I genuinely like every single person I’ve interacted with. ❓ Culture of Inquiry: As an intern, I’ve been encouraged to ask questions, and I’ve seen full-timers and even officer-level associates do the same. It’s a great learning environment. ⭐ Exceptional Leadership: This one means the most to me. My VP, Dave DeSerio, has been an incredible leader for the Fuel & Convenience team. He leads by example, follows through on his commitments, and genuinely cares about the entire team. He knows each of us personally and is hands-on in his approach. To an outsider, it might seem unbelievable, but Dave is our guy. Isn’t it crazy that the world doesn’t always expect leaders to be this engaged and knowledgeable about their direct reports? I feel incredibly lucky to have him as a mentor this summer. Congratulations to our Scholar, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Bui, who will join Wayfair this summer! Kaitlyn is a rising senior at the University of Washington, studying applied computational mathematical sciences: Discrete Math and Algorithms. The talk of more layoffs continues, but there is an important sector of business that is on the minds of many future producers: internships. I am reaching out to my network to see who may be in need of a summer 👩💼 finance intern. A good friend's 👩💼daughter is currently a sophomore at Michigan State University, incredibly talented and seeking a summer role. Let me tell you why I am so passionate about internships. Without internships, my career may not be what it is today. The tasks were varied, but I learned something from each experience. I moved to Chicago without any family connections. No legacy. No friend of the family hookup. I strongly believe that the combination of my experience as a Resident Advisor at Western Michigan University, coupled with the work I put in the following roles prepared me for interviews, rigor and expectations in the corporate world. Campbell Ewald - I worked on Corvette Quarterly General Motors - I filed paper crash tests in preparation for going digital. I worked alongside retired engineers that summer. The life skills I obtained. The stories of Detroit. The guidance about career. Priceless. McCann Worldgroup - Back when it was McCann Erickson. I worked in the Media Department. I was also required to go to every Wednesday rep meeting to get the latest scoop on CPMs and rate cards. One particular Wednesday I could not attend. John F. Kennedy, Jr. was in town promoting 'George'. Nobody was working. All middle managers were in their seats because the Big Wigs were in the main board room with JFK, Jr. So what did I do? I took my clipboard and coffee mug and road the elevator for about an hour. I timed things so I ended up on the floor where the hot chocolate was, which was right by the main board room. That's when JFK, Jr. opened the door and smiled at me. Sometimes, listen to the intern:). Biggs Gilmore Communications - Purchased by VML which is now VMLY&R (MA). Located in Kalamazoo, it was the largest ad agency. Partnering with the Western Michigan University - Haworth College of Business, it offered a competitive internship scholarship to a few students. I was lucky to snag one. I also snagged 15 extra pounds because of the ice cream parlor at the front of the agency. Nucleus Communications - This is where I officially began working on websites in a professional workspace. ***************************** I also believe internships should be PAID. So, if you are an immediate connection of mind or a friend of a friend, help me pay it forward. Thanks Harper Carpenter for having me on the panel for “Receiving and Actioning Feedback: A Conversation with Managers“! Today we spoke to over 300 (!!) Amazon summer interns about the importance of feedback and how to navigate the feedback loop during their internship. I was joined by my manager Jill Florant, former intern Siddharth Kale, and his manager Suresh to have an open conversation. The information shared is SO valuable for anyone in their career, not just interns. So, here’s a few takeaways from our panel discussion ➡ Hear feedback from multiple perspectives. Having contributions from diverse voices helps you get a full picture of how you can improve and iterate. Ask for feedback early on! This is also a great way to introduce yourself and develop meaningful relationships within your company. If you receive feedback you disagree with but feel passionate about your stance, it speaks volumes to have data that backs up your decision. Walk into feedback sessions with a positive mindset. People aren’t disagreeing with you for the sake of argument, it’s important to hear others’ opinions and take constructive criticism well. In the end, it’s all about being a team player! Receiving feedback can be intimidating, but approaching it with a constructive outlook will make your impact even greater. If you’re an intern or new grad and want to connect further, I’m always happy to share my experiences 😊

Early in my career, I was lucky to land an internship with a company that was eventually acquired by eBay, propelling me into the world of e-commerce. My first job out of college revolved around handling e-commerce for major retailers, allowing me to collaborate with renowned companies. One surprise was the age dynamic. Fresh out of college, I worked with mostly twenty-somethings, with a few individuals in their thirties and forties considered the "older" ones. This challenged the notion that only older professionals could make significant contributions. The e-commerce industry defied traditional leadership trajectories., too. The CEO of the company I worked for, around 30 at the time, exemplified this shift. This realization challenged my preconceived notions from college, where professors were mostly older individuals. I had assumed that experienced professionals held leadership positions. However, e-commerce proved otherwise, embracing fresh and innovative approaches. Today, young entrepreneurs are making significant strides in various fields. The e-commerce sector reshaped the industry by recognizing young talent. Reflecting on my early experiences, I am grateful for witnessing how young professionals drive change, defying conventional notions of leadership. #entrepreneurs #ecommerce #growth
