The UK is leading the way on cleaner energy, becoming the first major economy to halve emissions. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has reported that: 👉 The UK has cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% between 1990 and 2022 👉 Renewables now account for more than 40% of the country’s electricity, up from just 7% in 2010 👉 In 2012, coal provided almost 40% of UK electricity, but later in 2024, this is expected to be zero Whitfield Consulting Services is playing a part in the UK’s journey to Net Zero, offering expert civil and structural engineering design to projects in the power & energy space, as well as rail electrification support. Fantastic, exciting , the sate of the engineering art project without any irony. However every Moon has its dark side. The cost of the project is eye-watering and would cost £4,300 per MWkm. Is this number excessive or reasonable? The only way to tell it is to compare with alternatives. According to the data from TCSNP2 the mean cost of building OHL is only £815 per MWkm. Therefore we are talking about £3,5B extra money needed comparing with alternatives. There ara also other points need to be considered the OHL lifespan is 2-3 longer and can easily exceed 100 years while HVDC would not last so long even close. There are also power losses happening in HVDC convertors which would negotiate and beyond all winnings on line losses. Also there are other factors too , is it good for British economy as major providers like Hitachi and Prysmain are not British either? It makes sense to build HVDC cable lines across the sea when there is no alternatives but building it between two point of the same island ? Not makes much sense if the task is not to spend as much public money as possible. Some people would argue that OHL would spoil the landscape , which is true and only valid argument but from my point of view rubbish along the roads spoils country sites much more than pylons. You cannot go green using much more CO2 intensive technologies to achieve NetZero and it need to be clear to everyone As a conclusion, we have classic three options to chose from for transmission upgrade: Cheap, Green and offshore HVDC. And we only can chose two of those :)

Works on converter station for £2.4bn Germany-UK ‘invisible energy highway’ begin A £2.4bn (€2.8bn) “invisible #energy #highway” interconnector to link the UK’s grid with #Germany is moving into the next stage of #construction with #foundation works now underway on a new #UK converter station. Led by global investors Meridiam, ACP | Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power and Tepco. the NeuConnect project will become one of the world’s largest interconnectors containing 725km of land and #subseacables. New converter stations will be built on the Isle of Grain in Kent and the Wilhelmshaven region in northern Germany. The new link will allow 1.4GW of #electricity to flow in either direction, helping to boost #energy security and resilience while also helping to integrate #renewableenergy sources in the UK and Germany. Major #construction in the UK started in summer last year with #cabling contractor Prysmian carrying out horizontal directional drilling (HDD) works to allow the subsea cables to be brought on-land. This first phase of works was completed on schedule by the end of 2023. Alongside this, NeuConnect’s other main contractor Siemens Energy also recently completed enabling works for the UK converter station allowing the project to now move into its next phase of construction that includes the start of test piling works to form the foundations of the new UK converter station. Where this is concerned, work is now underway to install the first of 10 test piles at the site of the UK converter station on the Isle of Grain to help gather information for the main foundation works. Main foundation works will begin this summer once analysis of the test piling has been completed. The main programme of foundation works for the converter station will begin in June with additional drilling rigs brought onto site which are expected to install more than 1,400 piles up to 28m deep in total. Preparatory works are also now underway on a National Grid #substation which are being carried out alongside NeuConnect’s converter station works. National Grid’s substation will connect NeuConnect to the UK’s electricity grid. Alongside UK construction activities, work at NeuConnect’s site in Wilhelmshaven, Germany is also making good progress with major #construction on track to start this month. Neuconnect is currently estimating that by 2028 the project will be completed and begin operation. NeuConnect chief executive Arnaud Grévoz said: “The start of early works on the UK converter station is another important step forwards for NeuConnect, and continues the good progress and strong momentum behind the project. With major construction also starting soon in Germany, the delivery of the first UK-German energy link remains firmly on track.” https://lnkd.in/ejuW_k-P

“Centrica knocks on Wood’s door for #hydrogenstorage project in North Sea” June 26, 2024, - Aida Čučuk “Engineering and consulting company Wood has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract by energy company Centrica Energy Storage (CES) for the redevelopment of the UK’s Rough field in readiness for future hydrogen storage.” “The contract entails new #pipelines , a new unmanned installation, as well as #onshoreinjectionfacilities at the Easington #gasterminal . Wood claimed that this is the first step in making the field #hydrogenready .” “To note, the Rough reservoir, located in the Southern North Sea, has been used to store #naturalgas for over 30 years, and as per Wood, has the potential to provide over half of the UK’s hydrogen storage requirements.” “Centrica recently announced the company’s ambition for the Rough field to become the largest #longdurationhydrogenstorage facility in the world, however, a final investment decision (FID) for the redevelopment project is still dependent on a government support model that would underpin #gasstorage investment in the UK.” https://lnkd.in/ei8qmETH?
