Viridis Mining and Minerals Limited has secured another 998 hectares of licences to extend and adjoin the Cupim South prospect and create a dominant land position in the wake of more spectacular results. Recent intercepts up to 23,556 parts per million total rare earth oxide were the highest grades found to date in the region's alkaline complex, providing Viridis a second major discovery in as many months and a taste of sheer scale. "This expansion marks the final puzzle piece in our plan to consolidate a corridor of landholdings between two major resources and bridge Centro Sul to Cupim South. TSX listed Ivanhoe Mines and Gécamines, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) state-owned mining company has signed a new joint venture agreement to restart the Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine. According to Ivanhoe President Marna Cloete, both surface construction activities and underground development at Kipushi is tracking ahead of schedule for first production, expected in the second quarter of 2024. The signing of the new joint venture agreement heralds the beginning of a new era of production for the Kipushi Mine, which will resume operations one hundred years after first opening in 1924 as the world’s richest copper mine. Gécamines’ Chairman, Guy-Robert Lukama Nkunzi says that the relaunch of the Kipushi mine is a source of pride for all of Gécamines’ employees, the local communities of Kipushi town, the Haut-Katanga Province as well as our country as a whole. Ivanhoe Mines’ Founder and Executive Co-Chairman, Robert Friedland says that Kipushi is an extraordinary mineral endowment, holding not only the world's richest zinc orebody, but also significant quantities of copper, lead, silver, germanium and gallium. According to President Lazarus Chakwera, the Malawi government has reviewed several mining agreements over the last few months.   As a result of this effort, they have successfully negotiated and signed Mining Development Agreements (MDAs) with Globe Metals & Mining for the mining of niobium at Kanyika, in the Mzimba district, and with Lotus Resources for the Kayerekera uranium mine. In addition, the government is in the process of signing a new MDA with Mkango Resources for their Rare Earth Project at Songwe Hill in Phalombe. Meanwhile, Lindian Resources is set to start developing the Kangankunde Hill, which is estimated to host more than 261 million tonnes of Rare Earth Elements (REE). “Most exciting for Malawi,” says President Chakwera, “is that Sovereign Metals and Rio Tinto have entered into a partnership to develop the Kasiya Rutile-Graphite project.” The project is undergoing a Definitive Feasibility Study and an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, which marks a milestone in advancing Kasiya. Gold mineralization primarily occurs in #orogenic #greenstonebelt gold deposits, which are primarily hosted in ancient, deformed volcanic-sedimentary sequences (greenstone belts). Their main characteristics include association with structurally complex, metamorphic settings, particularly near faults and shear zones. Mineralization is often related to regional tectonic events and fluid flow through deep crustal structures. Gold is commonly hosted in quartz-carbonate veins, often with sulfides like pyrite or arsenopyrite. The image below shows the number of primary gold projects in Quebec distributed through the Lassonde Curve. There are 16 producing projects in this region operated by several large cap mining companies including Newmont Corporation, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, Hecla Mining Company, Eldorado Gold , IAMGOLD Corporation, Wesdome Gold Mines , Bonterra Resources Inc. and Abcourt Mines Inc. among others. Some of the largest developing projects in feasibility stage (7), PFS/Scoping stage (19) and Resource-definition stage (75) include Troilus Gold Corp.'s (294 Mt @ 0.74 g/t), IAMGOLD Corporation's Nelligan (203 Mt @ 0.86 g/t), Ressources Falco Ltée's Horne (130 Mt @ 1.42 g/t) and Probe Gold Inc.’s Novador (119 Mt @ 1.3 g/t) among others.  There is a vast amount (207) of exploration stage projects in this region, with some of the junior companies including Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd, Dundee Precious Metals Inc., Wallbridge Mining Company Limited, O3 Mining - Minière O3 , Azimut Exploration Inc. Dr Sixtus Mulenga has a rich and inspiring journey in mining. His in-depth knowledge, understanding and experience in this critical space coupled with Mfikei Makayi's expertise on the subject matter unpacked the complexities involved in mining from the early stages of geo mapping to winding up of a mine, with its life cycle spanning roughly about 70 years or so was very insightful. "1 in 200" thereabout in geo mapping explorations turn into mines, that means the other "199" do not. One can come to the conclusion that mining is for courageous or irrational individuals. With Zambia's benchmark to reach 3 MT of copper production by the year 2031. Mr Norman Mbazima brings out the point of return on investment to bear in mind the end investor at the end of that pension financing for example. That means having a financial model in place that will bring about wealth for the country through taxes and return on investment to the investor. A key highlight was also the need for local participation referenced by most of the speakers on the panel and the need for safe mining to protect the environment and keep everybody involved safe. Since Kombat’s rebirth, geologists were eyeing significant surface mineralisation at an area about 15km east of the active mining licence and the historic mining town of Kombat.   The area was known as Schlangental, a key prospect within the wider Kombat property.     According to Jed Richardson, Trigon’s CEO and Executive Chairman, there were reports of historical drilling that indicated mineralisation continued at depth, but no cores or detailed logs were available.   Trigon started planning to drill more than 36 holes totalling 4000m in the area they refer to as the Copper King Extension. The first two holes have now been drilled at Schlangental, and both holes intercepted mineralisation at modest depths.     The mineralisation was largely chalcocite (sulfide) and malachite (oxide) with associated higher-than-average silver compared to the main mineral resource at the Kombat mine and compared to the bornite and chalcopyrite copper sulfides predominant at the Kombat mine.   “Given the encouraging start, deeper drilling will now be undertaken to confirm if this pattern continues in the new area,” says Richardson.
