Calgary, this is no way to treat a baby. In 2009, the Vancouver Humane Society launched an awareness campaign to highlight the cruelty of calf-roping at The Calgary Stampede. The photograph used in this campaign was captured by our founder, Jo-Anne McArthur, at The Stampede in 2006. The ad succinctly illustrates what many of us overlook amidst the chaos of these events: rodeo pins a vulnerable baby animal against a bully and calls it "entertainment." Today, in 2024, calf-roping, now referred to as tie-down roping, still persists at the Stampede. This year, the calf roping event is sponsored by Halliburton. "It's basic human instinct to protect the young. And not just our own. Whether it's puppies, kittens, cubs or calves, the vulnerability speaks to us all. Well some of us" the ad reads. It's time to end calf-roping at The Calgary Stampede. ➡ Access rodeo visuals on our Stock Platform for your advocacy: https://lnkd.in/eACHVdSi #Calgary City of Calgary Tourism Calgary #CalgaryStampede

Once a species is declared to have a "production purpose" there is no limit to the barbarity. Complete heartlessness orchestrated as circus.

It’s high time to pass the page on cruel traditions and open a new one to a century of non-violence for all living sentient beings.

I can STILL give a little benefit of doubt (understand their POV, rather) to the people who are not consuming a plant based diet, or are still going to zoos (no means of justifying it but I understand their reasoning because they're misguided or uneducated on the same + social conditioning) because the cruelty is not visible to the naked eye but rodeos? How can people watch animal cruelty and cheer for it?

I understand the for food argument, but stuff like this is nothing but macho flexing. So unnecessary.

There may be an awareness level but it has not translated on the enterprise of cable company, ie Time Warner, and Spectrum TV to omit the purchase of the Cowboy channel. The unfabulous Calgary stampede is available for purchase.on that channel. The cable company doesn't need to promote that roping of calf legs and in some instances breaking their legs. That option should be boycott material.

It's sickening that this animal abuse is allowed to continue and celebrated as entertainment. There are laws against animal cruelty, but a blind eye is turned when it comes to the Stampede.
