Navigating the GenAI wave requires not just a surfboard, but a whole new way of swimming. As we stand on the brink of a $200 billion investment deluge, it's clear: AI isn't just knocking on the door; it's redesigning the house. The paradox of GenAI—threatening jobs while supercharging productivity, diluting the human element while deepening our data insights—echoes the dual-edged sword of every major technological leap in history. The sectors? From healthcare's diagnostic AI to finance's algorithmic trading, no shore is untouched. The jobs? Those that evolve with AI will thrive; those that don't may well find themselves relics of a bygone era. As for us, the workforce? The key lies in adaptability and lifelong learning. Generative AI — GenAI for short — is a paradox. It might cause shifts in job roles, but it might also create massive leaps in productivity. It might lead to a gap in the 'human element' of work, but it might reveal new insights about data that we hadn't been able to see previously. The truth is, we don't exactly know what the future holds, but we do know that by 2025 — just one year from now — nearly $200 billion will be invested into AI-related technology globally. In other words, AI is coming. What will be the impact of #AI on the #FutureOfWork according to a study conducted by McKinsey & Company and referenced in the AI Index Report 👇 👉 Although a large proportion of the business professionals surveyed (30%) expected little to no change in the number of employees, 43% felt that staff size would decrease in the next 3 years. Only 15% felt that generative AI would lead to increases in the number of employees. There were also widespread predictions that AI would lead to an increased need for employee #reskilling. 🧠 What do these insights mean in other words? While the impact of AI on the number of employees in an organisation will likely be, on average, minimal, depending on how rapidly generative AI tools are deployed in the coming years, we might see a decrease in the number of #job postings for certain functions as AI is taking over more of the tasks for certain roles (e.g. customer support). 🧠 Also, when it comes to the need to be reskilled, which was expressed by the majority of business professionals surveyed, what I see happening instead is that employees are left, in most cases, to their own devices. In other words, while their employers are figuring out different business use cases for generative AI tools, employees are learning by themselves how to use them. 👉 The need to equip people with AI skills will only increase in the coming years, but unfortunately, most organisations will struggle to keep up to speed with the latest developments in generative AI and reskill their workers at the same time. Therefore, my message, which I also delivered yesterday at the Business Circle Power of People Conference, is that it's down to us to reskill ourselves.
