The European Council's draft Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 raises significant concerns regarding biodiversity and climate action. Of concern is the lack of consideration of biodiversity and the minimal focus on climate change, which is shifted primarily to adaptation measures. These decisions have far-reaching implications as they not only shape EU policy, but also influence the allocation of funds under the upcoming Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). IFAW calls on Member States to address these issues and incorporate a stronger EU commitment to the environment in the agenda of the next political term. The European Union must ensure that nature-based solutions and conservation efforts are prioritised to protect our planet's biodiversity and tackle the urgent challenges of climate change. We will continue to follow these developments closely. #Environment #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

🌿 Biodiversity has been a cornerstone of the EU legislative agenda. However, powerful lobbies are now trying to portray it as an obstacle to food and energy security. 🛑 ⏸ Calls for a 'pause' in environmental action risk pushing nature and our economies to the brink. We urge EU leaders to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution by strengthening the European Green Deal for a Nature-Positive Europe by 2030. 🌍💚 These are the proposals from the European Habitats Forum to make nature great again 📄👇 #RestoreNature #GreenDeal #Biodiversity

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water recently undertook public consultation on the Draft National Roadmap for protecting and conserving at least 30% of Australia’s land by 2030. SLR considers the Draft National Roadmap to be a great step in identifying the process for protecting the unique ecological heritage of this continent. We are pleased to have submitted our comments for review, highlighting a few key areas where deficiencies in the document limit it's effectiveness as a tool for helping SLR, and the businesses we partner with, to be able to deliver on Australia's Global Biodiversity Framework commitments. Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
❗ EU Member States are set to miss targets to protect 30% of EU seas by 2030 ❗ EU countries are also far behind in achieving their commitment to strictly protect 10% of European seas by 2030. Faced with the dual biodiversity and climate crises, the European Commission cannot ignore this alarm signal and must take firmer action for the EU to meet its biodiversity targets and remain credible internationally vis-à-vis the recently adopted UN Global Biodiversity Framework. On this #InternationalDayForBiodiversity we highlight the important role financial institutions can play in halting and reversing biodiversity loss. According to the UN, one million animal and plant species are currently threatened with extinction. To combat this, the Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF) was adopted in December 2022, setting targets to achieve harmony with nature, by 2050. Financial institutions are #PartOfThePlan, with 4 of the GBF's 23 targets focused on finance. A priority for #COP16 on the Convention on Biological Diversity (#CBD), taking place in Colombia in late October, will be monitoring progress on the GBF and exploring how public and private finance can be mobilized.
