The world has a new biggest #floating offshore wind farm - via WindEurope The world's largest floating wind farm "Hywind Tampen" was officially opened by Crown Prince Haakon of #Norway last week. It is the first #offshorewind farm in Norway, demonstrating the opportunities for renewable power production on the Norwegian continental shelf. Hywind Tampen is also the first wind farm in the world that will be supplying #electricity to oil and gas platforms. Hywind Tampen is expected to reduce CO2 #emissions caused by #oil and #gas operations in the North Sea by 200,000 tonnes annually. The Equinor wind farm features 11 Siemens Gamesa 8.6 MW wind turbines located approximately 140 kilometres offshore off Norway. The Norwegian Government has set an ambition to award acreage equivalent to 30 GW of offshore wind by 2040. With the transition to Renewable Energy Sources (RES), countries need to utilise their existing resources. For the Nordic Countries in Europe, it is not solar, but wind. In southern Europe and countries like Australia, its solar. These Offshore floating wind farms are incredible pieces of technology. The scale and magnitude of these projects is mind blowing. They are placed out in the deep sea to leverage the strength of the wind. Conversely, its a big challenge to make these projects profitable with supply chain issues, regulatory challenges, and project delays. Since August 2016, NEMLog has been silently and efficiently collecting articles related to the energy transition here in Australia. To date, it has amassed a collection of over 1.65 million article titles and their links, with an additional 1,000 to 1,500 being added daily. It's a fabulous to watch the energy news in realtime and to have a searchable collection of energy concentrated links going back 7 years now. The "Offshore Wind" term, both locally and globally, was recently incorporated into the search criteria as our fledgling offshore wind industry and experiences grow here in Australia. Lots happening in Europe and the USA at the moment with mixed headlines on the booming or financial failure of the industry (see a few in the comment below). So it was nice to see the following news article and supporting Youtube video (August 2023) appear today. Although still modest in size, the design is benefiting from Norway's extensive oil and gas experience, aiming to refine processes and minimise risks. Notably, this will be the first wind farm to supply gas and oil rigs. Superb footage of the construction and installation of Hywind Tampen has been released to celebrate the floating wind farm's completion. The official inauguration took place yesterday, and 88 MW now make up the capacity of the largest installed floating wind farm. What's next? Of all major achievements, the number of units (11) seems obvious. However I'd like to highlight the floating units proven ability to overwinter in a sheltered area, with their wind turbine on top, prior to being towed to site. This may not seem so significant, but it's actually a milestone for major industrial projects to come. https://lnkd.in/dUt7Y3Gi

I am so very excited to announce that Lydian Energy is officially launching. I've worked with solar array projects from two solar modules on my first install in 2015, to now at Lydian with the scale of 500,000+ modules. I started in solar with the hopes of offering lower cost power than the local coal burning power plant in my hometown. In March of 2023, the Merrimack Station lost its forward capacity auction funding after 2026, and this year announced it will convert to battery and solar in 2028. Solar and batteries are the cheapest form of generation, and at scale we are watching the grid move from coal, to gas, to solar, even while the grid expands to the needs of electrification and data centers. What is truly transformational though is that with modular solar, from 2 solar panels to hundreds of thousands of solar panels, is that everyone in front of and behind the meter can participate in the generation of power, and with batteries can use or sell that power whenever it makes financial sense to do so. Over the past 7 years I have been tracking my personal utility bills, and I have seen the direct impact of my work, my industry's work, and adjacent industries work on lowering wholesale electricity prices. What has gone up is the cost to transport power as the grid ages, and becomes more susceptible to disruption with increased storm energy (polar vortex, fires, hurricanes). Storm energy from warmer weather of climate change. But I have hope, because I have crunched the numbers. To run the current US economy we only need 50kWDC of solar per person (even with the current inefficient fossil fuel thermal wastes), and by building solar we would be paid back by 2029 in fuel savings if we built it TODAY. So I am building part of the solution of what the US needs with the Lydian Energy Team with massive scale solar and battery solutions. The other part of the solution starts at home. From direct electrification and efficiency upgrades appliance by appliance (LEDs, induction stove, heat pumps, water heaters, micro e-mobility, electric vehicles, building integrated solar, remote work), to turning traditional electricity markets into peer to peer commodity and currency exchange with bring your own device demand response, and dispatchable generation of vehicle to grid, home batteries, and solar. Every person has a part to play, whether it is 2000 hours a year at your job, or 1 hour a week around your own home. I am just so lucky to be able to contribute in so many different ways. We are all turning the fuel paradigm upside down, as the US passed peak fossil fuel consumption in 2008 (before I even got involved), due to the aggregate work of every person in the US. And now economics is on the fuelless side, accelerating the change. All that is left is getting solar power to the people. Whether that is through the traditional wired grid, through mobile battery vehicles, through synthetic fuels, or distributed generation.

Sunly has opted out of developing an offshore wind farm - why did we choose not to bid? "We compared our various projects and decided to focus on onshore hybrid projects, specifically solar and wind projects, which allow us to bring new renewable energy capacities to the market most rapidly. Therefore, we opted not to participate in the Liivi 1 auction," commented Klaus Erik Pilar, the Country Manager of Sunly Estonia, explaining the reasons for the withdrawal. Today, Sunly's primary focus is on onshore wind farms - onshore wind contributes to achieving Estonia's 2030 renewable electricity target, even if only half of the planned projects materialize. ⬇ Read more (in Estonian):
