Merci Yvon. Lemaho Aurélie Tasiemski Fabrice Bertile et Philippe BULET pour ce super article ! #Océan #Biomimétisme #Biomolécule #Biodiversité #Santé "As indicated by the participants of the 2019 #Nobel conference on Bioinspired Medicine in #Stockholm, the main limitation in all countries to investigate wild animals is poor academic funding. Most of the members of academic committees reviewing and selecting grant applications usually are involved in standard research on laboratory animals and are hard to convince of the value of conducting research on “exotic” animals. One reason might be that the #OneHealth concept of a common health denominator is not so widespread. Considering all the projects reviewed in this paper, it took years, sometimes decades, to get an appropriate funding, including for the marine worm project on Arenicola marina which is the most advanced in practical clinical application as indicated above. Last week, a delegation of EU-LIFE attended the #EUResearchArea Conference and the 26th #ERA Forum meeting. Marta Agostinho, EU-LIFE Executive Director, advocated for a constructive policy to #AnimalResearch and the development of new approach methodologies (#NAMs) following the active role of EU-LIFE in the co-creation of the ERA action on this topic. Her main points were: • 𝗔𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝘀 that help to reduce the use of animals in research and regulatory testing. Likewise, we are fully committed to the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). • Researchers are the ones developing NAMs, so 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 for the success of any policy on NAMs and must be part of it at all stages. • The main value of this ERA action is the capacity to 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀, most specially at the regulatory stage; global coordination beyond the EU is also critical. • This action will only contribute to EU competitiveness if it allows the advancement of biomedical research and helps move science forward, 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 and not on political timelines. • The 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 component of the action towards all actors - researchers, regulators, policy makers and citizens - is paramount. Informed policies must be based on broader understanding of the complexity of the biology behind biomedical research and on the potential risks, gains and impacts of the policies. Alternatives to Laboratory Animals - Latest Publication with Prof. DI Dr. Winfried Neuhaus - European network project IMPROVE COST Actions are European network projects whose work is funded by the European Commission. The aim of the IMPROVE network is to improve the quality of biomedical science with the help of concepts from the 3R area. The 3R principles deal with avoiding, reducing and refining animal testing; the 3R principles are also anchored in national law via European Regulation 2010/63. Within the network, working groups were installed on the scientific quality and translatability of preclinical data to humans, on the implementation of the 3R principles, on the dissemination of the 3R principles and on 3Rs in training. In addition to these main working groups, a cross-group working group on ethical topics has been etsablished. In addition, clearly defined questions are worked on together by the now over 230 participants. The COST Action IMPROVE has been running for 2 years and is led by Prof. DI Dr. Winfried Neuhaus. Details about the presentation of this network project can be found in the journal Alternatives to Laboratory Animals via the following link: https://lnkd.in/dw5DHZ7r #research #3Rs #replacementrefinementreduction #alternativestoanimaltesting #alternativestolaboratoryanimals #laboratorytesting #biomedicalscience #medicalethics #medizinstudium #medizinstudiumösterreich #medicaldegree #studiereninöserreich #austria #nö #wienerneustadt #krems #danubeprivateuniversity

We seem to have learnt very little from the global pandemic: 1. A pandemic the world’s leading epidemiologists have been expecting because they knew that humans are vulnerable because the line between us and exotic animals had long been breached for legal trade purposes. 2. Which is now driving up the legal ‘harvesting’ for the trade of primates for the pharmaceutical industry, as they increase research to prepare for the next pandemic. 3. And, as a result, exposing people to stressed and immune-compromised primates, increasing the risk of the next pandemic. I hear you saying, but if business and industry are doing the right thing and only buying from the legal trade what’s the problem? In addition to poor monitoring and regulation, a 2020 survey and report into green crime in company supply chains found of the business respondents who admitted they knew about environmental crime, a substantial 65% know or suspect that third parties they conduct business with may have been involved in a range of illegal, environmentally damaging activities. Only 16% of respondents say that they would report a third-party breach externally; no one is telling the necessary authorities. And, 63% of respondents agree that the economic climate is encouraging organisations to take regulatory risks in order to win new business. The trade in lab animals is booming, and it isn't all legal: https://lnkd.in/gzmVuFZg
Today is #WorldAnimalDay! 🐁 I'm taking this opportunity to share the investigation I published in Le Monde earlier this year, exposing a major failure of the French Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche. More than 20,000 scientific research projects using live animals have been authorized by the research ministry in France since 2013 outside of the regulatory framework. More precisely: these experiments received the assent of ‘ethics committees’ that were not properly registered, despite this being a requirement of the European directive 2010/63. The information was collected thanks to FOI requests made by the Transcience association, campaigning "by all legal means" for the development of scientific research without the use of animals. The problem goes deeper than a simple lack of registration, since a more in-depth examination reveals that these committees have serious shortcomings in terms of independence and impartiality, and several do not comply with the requirements for member composition. This remains largely unaddressed to this day. ‘Every year, two million sentient beings are put to death in France for scientific purposes, yet it is astonishing that no one has looked into all these shortcomings sooner’, said Muriel Obriet, President of Transcience.
