Following the Grenfell Tower fire, the public enquiry and the Hackitt independent review, it is clear that significant changes will be required in the construction industry in the future. Some might consider that the changes are not before time, others will be concerned at the impact on costs and competitiveness which are likely to be experienced at least in the medium term.
The first big change will be that:
- The requirement for contractors to be able to demonstrate competence
- Specifications are likely to be tighter and there will be the need to ensure that all aspects of the buildings construction integrity and fire safety systems have been fully considered and documented

As part of the developers building safety remediation contracts, a number of Housebuilders have appointed TP Passive Fire Protection to assist with defective Fire Stopping & Fire Doors.
Initially we were involved in investigative surveys of properties with the property management company and fire consultants to ascertain the works required for the remediation project. This involved a sample of properties for inspection. We then undertook a pilot of five properties to ensure all stakeholders were happy with the process and the outcomes.
Facing the challenge of addressing fire safety defects in live buildings, we deployed our experienced team of fire stoppers and fire door installers, boasting a wealth of expertise in both new build and occupied environments. This strategic deployment proved instrumental in navigating the complexities of remediation while ensuring minimal disruption to occupants.
The TP Group's directors, drawing upon their extensive knowledge of construction processes and building history, played a pivotal role in programming and communicating the required remediation works to stakeholders. Effective communication and meticulous planning were identified as key factors contributing to this projects overall success.
One of the notable challenges we encountered was the need to deal with residents in new homes, a task made easier by TP Painting Solutions, our specialist painting division, dedicated to leaving properties in pristine condition post-remediation.
The culmination of the teams efforts resulted in the certification of fire stopping and fire door remediations for over 300 properties across 64 blocks. This achievement underscores our commitment to quality, compliance, and stakeholder satisfaction.
The successful completion of remediation works signifies a significant step forward in enhancing fire safety standards within residential buildings. With improved safety measures in place, occupants can now enjoy increased peace of mind and assurance of their well-being.
In conclusion, TP Passive Fire Protections expertise, coupled with our dedication to communication, planning, and high-quality workmanship, has set a new benchmark for fire safety remediation projects. As Government buildings embrace these enhanced safety standards, our contribution stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence.

The recent #GrenfellTower Inquiry released yesterday found that the fire was the result of years of neglect, poor regulation, and cost-cutting measures, all of which took the lives of 72 people.
The findings have highlighted critical issues that changed the approach to building safety - it revealed that the cladding on Grenfell Tower failed safety tests and was a major factor in the fire’s rapid spread. It's a shame that something tragic like this had to happened to lead to crucial changes in safety regulations.
The Grenfell findings and the new #BuildingSafetyAct serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role the professionals I work with must play in safeguarding lives when working on projects.
A quote taken from the inquiry on YouTube - "Simply, if you work in the construction industry and you do not feel the weight of responsibility you have for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job."
