Thank you Forbes for the feature, and not giving up on the narrative that gender equality in the film industry is 'an old narrative'. Worldwide film school have a gender divide of 50/50 however the number of female directors drops heavily after graduation. In 2022, women comprised 24% of directors, writers, producers, editors and cinematographers working on the top 250 grossing films, down 1% from 2021 *According to the Celluloid Ceiling report. I co-founded the Female Film Club four years ago to stop talented women leaving the film industry and demystify the process for new ones coming in. We created an environment that supports their growth, addresses the challenges they face, and encourages them to stay and continue making their mark. Members have access to regular mindset coaching, masterclasses, masterminds and workshops by acclaimed film professionals. There's currently thousands of members from 55+ countries and variety of professions. All online, so the barriers of travelling, childcare or even having to put on something 'presentable' are removed. It's vital that we don't give up on this quest just because we've heard it many times, there is still so much to be done. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐚 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭: 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐔𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐫𝐚 The Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023 and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, were introduced in India to improve the film certification process and combat piracy. The new rules introduce age-based certification for films (UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+) and require films edited for television to be recertified. The Cinematograph Certification Board (CBFC) will now have more women members (increased representation from 1/3 to potentially 1/2), and certification will be valid indefinitely. These changes are expected to benefit filmmakers (faster certification, protection from piracy), promote gender equality in the CBFC, and create a more inclusive environment for the Indian film industry. While working with a cinema program that had me visiting elementary, middle, and high school media classrooms in California Department of Education, you immediately noticed 4th grade girls leading the productions (Directors, DPs, ADs, and Producers) but as you advance through the grades you saw fewer of them in those roles despite having the aptitude and desire. WHY?! Likewise in workforce development, most of my #productionassistant trainees interested in camera are female and/or non-binary, but #icglocal600 boasts only 17% gender equity. We could assemble crews by picking names at random out of the phone book and have more gender equity than we do currently. On December 10th (when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed), we stand united for equality, justice, and dignity. Every talent, every voice, and every story matters. In filmmaking, human rights play a crucial role in both content creation and the treatment of those involved in the industry. Filmmakers have a responsibility to portray diverse perspectives accurately and ethically while respecting the rights and dignity of individuals. 1. Representation - strive for accurate and respectful representation of various communities, cultures, and identities. Avoiding stereotypes and promoting diversity helps in fostering a more inclusive film industry. 2. Labor Rights - ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable work hours is essential to uphold the human rights of everyone involved in the filmmaking process. 3. Freedom of Expression - Filmmakers should enjoy the freedom to express their ideas and artistic vision. However, this should be balanced with a responsibility to avoid promoting hate speech, discrimination, or any form of harm. 4. Consent and Privacy - respecting the privacy and obtaining informed consent from individuals involved in filmmaking, especially in documentaries or real-life stories, is vital. This includes both on-screen subjects and behind-the-scenes crew members. 5. Social Impact - Filmmaking has the power to influence public opinion and shape societal norms. Responsible storytelling can contribute positively to human rights awareness, encouraging empathy and understanding. 6. Anti-Discrimination Policies - Film productions should have clear anti-discrimination policies, addressing issues such as gender inequality, racial discrimination, and any form of harassment. Promoting an inclusive and respectful work environment is crucial. 🇺🇲 The US Constitution DOES NOT protect gender equality 🇺🇲 We are STILL waiting for the Equal Rights Amendment to get across the very last threshold of being published in the constitution to enshrine gender equality for all Check out Emily Best's amazing work about the 100 year fight for an Equal Rights Amendment, which requires tending old wounds to build a truly inclusive movement: https://lnkd.in/gwferJgA RATIFY is about the women building a truly intersectional movement for equality. It’s about women fighting relentlessly against people who hide behind procedure to deny foundational protections for all people. This film taught us about all the ways in which our democratic ideals - and bureaucracies - can fail, even in support of something as wildly popular as equal rights. What we got to witness on the ground in Virginia was a renewed movement for equality in this country, one that seeks to heal the wounds caused by the divide-and-conquer strategy that had plagued our equal rights movements since the constitution was written. At many points throughout our short history, our movements for equality have fractured at the fault lines between race and gender. Feminists and abolitionists traded each other off to advance the causes of Black vote (for men) or the women’s vote (for white women). Again and again throughout history, our collective efforts for equality have been set back by a divide and conquer strategy that pits race against gender, leaving Black women, who sit at a very specific intersection in America, to fight a singular battle. Perhaps nowhere has this been a greater setback than in the movement for gender equality. #GenderEquity
